I can see why this store received many poor reviews. Upon arriving it wasn’t entirely clear whether they were open or still in business, since the Owego location closed, I thought maybe this one did too and hadn’t been updated yet. Nope, when you get up close, you can see they are, in fact open, they just don’t have anything in front or in their windows the way other supermarkets do.
The store appeared quite large and I was interested in seeing their products. Shortly after entering, I realized despite the vastness of the store, there’s a lot of empty space. Even after looking at the shelves and seeing if anything caught my eye, nope few products had large quantities of items in large supply on the shelves, except probably the beer and cereals. The produce was small and unimpressive, the website claims to carry- beloved brand- Seabrook for creamed spinach, they don’t carry it here. Grand Union website lists it though. They don’t have the Greek yogurt that I get, Fage, only the high sugar varieties.
Then, since we have the app and click our digital coupons, we saw one with a “red dot savings” sticker on their toilet paper item. The price itself has a date but the red dot tags don’t list any dates on them. At the register, we inquired with a very young cashier, Vinnie, I believe. He was very kind and helpful and sought to assist us by calling in a manager. After several minutes, no one arrived, we asked if perhaps there was anyone else to call. He said no, this happens and sometimes he doesn’t know where they are when he needs assistance. I saw a line developing and one older lady was struggling to stand and purchasing a sole bottle of water. Working in customer service and at registers for years, I asked if he had a way to suspend the transaction to help the others in line while we waited for a manager.
A person arrived and, I’d be shocked if they’re the manager, no customer service whatsoever. So this woman in a lemon blouse meanders over to us eventually and we tell her we saw the sticker advertising a promo or coupon on the toilet paper but we couldn’t find it in the digital coupons online. She said, plain as anything, “oh, then it’s not on sale, it’s expired.” Why is it expired if it’s still stuck onto the price label for the item? “Idk that’s not my job”, she quipped. I told her it’s false advertising, which it is by the way. Take it off or get someone to take it off for you and keep your already sparse supply up to date. We declined in taking the toilet paper, let’s be realistic Walmart is just down the road and Price Chopper is near as well. This Grand Union can go and she can go with it. You learn to apologize to your customers for the mistake of not advertising things correctly and you take ownership of issues. None of this pertains to the delightful cashier who, understandably, wanted to be anywhere else in the moment. You and me both!
Potential customers, go anywhere else, seriously! The prices, as mentioned by previous...
Read moreI highly recommend the Grand Union bakery for cupcakes and cake! Not only do they taste high quality but the price point is unbeatable in Norwich. I have ordered from them several times for all my parties. The bakery manager is always pleasant and attentive with my orders and has done a fabulous job executing them. The bakery and store itself is kept clean and is easy on the eye. The store manager is has also gone above and beyond to help me find items within the store on several occasions and never once has deferred me to someone else. Pleasant, professional and friendly…Norwich Grand Union is the...

It is definitely within walking distance from downtown Norwich which is also a plus especially for people that don't...
