East Coast Calligraphy — Local services in Collingswood

Yesterday I took a brush lettering workshop at East Coast Calligraphy. I did not have any previous experience, but the description for the course said that it was suitable for beginners so I signed up. I had a hugely positive experience at the course.

The shop is beautiful; it is clean and welcoming, and it was a lovely place to spend a few hours. As a teacher, I can be a bit picky about instruction, but the instruction that was given yesterday was superb. Maureen, the instructor, was patient and kind. She provided clear instructions to the group, and then walked around to each of us individually to make sure we understood the brushstroke or letter that we were working on. Maureen taught us an entire alphabet, as well as a variety of flourishes and flowers that we could add to our lettering. She allowed us to try a variety of brushes, and reminded us that it was okay to make mistakes.

In addition to teaching us the basics, Maureen showed us examples of what we could create as our skills improved. She also told us that lettering was relaxing, and that incorporating some practice into our daily lives would be beneficial for our stress levels. I wholeheartedly agree.

The shop has an impressive collection of inks, pens, brushes, and paper--but I never felt any sort of pressure to purchase more than what I needed. I left class with a small project, and suggestions for things that I can do to practice my lettering.

I just took the Modern Calligraphy for Beginners class. Michelle (owner) is an amazing instructor. She is so knowledgeable, kind and patient. I'm a lefty, so Michelle helped me figure out how to correctly do left handed calligraphy which you can not easily learn online. I learned so much in a short period of time (3+ hours). Took an introductory calligraphy workshop and couldn’t have been more pleased! Michele is a wonderful teacher- patient, professional, encouraging and oh so very TALENTED! Her work is beautiful.
