Crete Country Store — Local services in Crete

Crete resident here! I work at the local post office here in crete and today after my shift I decided to stop and get a cold drink as it was extremely hot outside. As I entered the building the sign said open and doors were unlocked so I assumed they were open for business. I even passed by a lady who appeared to be waiting on customers. As I continued through the building I found a bar top where I figured I could get something to drink, however, there was no one inside and lights were turned off. Because the door was open and and the sign said open I figured someone would be coming shortly and that I should wait. I hadn’t been inside 5min before I was rudely approached and forced to leave by the building leaser. While the sign clearly says open she claims that It was not. She tried to force me through a back exit and I let her know that I’d be leaving through the front on the Main Street where I can be seen. I continued to wait on a bench outside of the property to which said owner followed me and harassed me outside of the property. I am a young African American woman who has lived in crete for the last 9 years and have served as a member in this community for the last year. (Working at the local post office) I do not appreciate being treated this rudely by local business owners! Especially when I am voluntarily trying to spend my money here. I will not...

This is a charming little store with a fun mix of unique odds and ends. I was excited to stop in, especially with a gift card I’d received. However, I was cautioned beforehand not to bring my kids, as others had had negative experiences with the staff.

The woman working that day wasn’t exactly warm, but she wasn’t outright rude either—just not particularly welcoming.

Unfortunately, the biggest letdown was the quality of the sweets I purchased for my kids. Most of the treats seemed old. The gummies were so tough I couldn’t even cut them with kitchen scissors, and the gum-filled lollipops had soft outer shells but rock-hard gum inside that was nearly impossible to chew. My kids were really disappointed and ended up not wanting to eat any of them, saying they tasted bad.

I really wanted to like this place, but sadly, it didn’t live up to expectations.
