Update 2025: i love this rink and enjoy having my kids associated with sports teams that call this rink home. I.am further proud to see that the flags are appropriately lowered to half mast immediately after the order was issued.
Update 2024: This rink has improved greatly over the last couple years. They've remodeled and the ice surfaces are nice. Friendly staff and plenty of public skating, stick and shoots, and free style sessions.
Update 2022 #2 Dropping 2 stars wasn't fair since my daughter's figure skating makes up for what I see as lacking on the hockey side.
Update 2022: I dropped two stars from previous review. The more time I spend here and observe the hockey teams, coaches, administrators, and players, the more concerned I get for the future of the sport of hockey. There appears to be some sort of secret formula to playing for certain teams (not applicable to the highest tier team here). Furthermore, I don't see kids having fun anymore unlike what I experienced back in 70s and 80s. Lastly, unless you start your kid on skates right after they learn to walk; pay the coaches for many lessons and sessions (time and $$$); and, here's the kicker, your kid is a naturally talented you may want to get your kids into another sport. Sadly, my kid is missing two of those three. I didn't want to write this review because the Figure Skating side of the house has better coaches and administration.
Update: I am at this ice rink every day now. Love the place, the remodeling looks great.
It's the best ice rinks in the vast suburbs of the blue lagoon, with the exception of Capitals Arena and their practice rinks. I spent most of my time after work at this ice rink with my kids. I wish the University of Delaware ice rinks were as good as these when I was growing up. I recommend this rink if you have an aspiring figure skating daughter or NHL bound son. I can...
Read moreThis place has to be the poorest excuse for an ice arena. The staff are extremely under trained. I honestly feel bad for them.
Iâm unsure if they just have high school kids working or young college students I really canât tell.
I tried to get my sons hockey skates sharpened and the kid working the equipment shop touched the blades and said â I canât sharpen these if theyâre coldâ after they werenât even used for almost 30 minutes. I honestly believe that they just were never trained in preforming skate sharpening. If thatâs the case they should probably be trained to say â Iâm sorry youâll have to come back at a time when someone whoâs actually trained properly is workingâ as opposed to just trying to explain something that is beyond false. Not only were the skates not cold⌠he touched the plastic part of the skate and tried explaining that the IN QUOTE â internal temperature of the skates would make the blade shatterâ haha while touching the plastic. The manager came out who was still pretty young to be said manager said â sorry thatâs the policyâ I then asked to see the policy that she speaks of⌠which there isnât an actual policy.. just what their â trainedâ. I was flabbergasted at how ridiculous this sounded, I thought cameras were going to come out and shout that I was being prankedâŚlike I said in my original statement. This is a joke of an â ice arenaâ if youâre looking for an arena where people actually know about ice sports and equipment.. go to...
Read moreAwkward. We paid $12 for a public skate on a Thursday afternoon. There were a bunch of ice skating lessons going on at the same time on the same rink as the public skate. Skaters were going backwards, forwards, left, and right. Being the only free skater amongst the lessons was awkward and didn't feel safe. Even during the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic only half of the skaters had masks on. Most of the adult teachers kept taking their masks off. My daughter reported that some of the skaters taking lessons gave her dirty looks when she was in their way. One of the lessons skaters was skating backwards and almost knocked my 10 year old daughter over. Having a free skate open to the public while having a bunch of lessons on the ice at the same time is just a really bad idea IMHO. It's an accident waiting to happen. If we ever go to public skate again I'm going to make a point to call and ask if lessons will be happening at the same time. If lessons are happening, we are not going to...
