The fence is broke at the entrance like someone ram it til it fell down. About 30% of the fence is on the ground. If I wasn't sitting 13 feet in the air I wouldn't have even seen the fence on the ground cause the grass hasn't been cut in forever. It's a big graveyard but I only seen about 10-15 grave stones. Idk if it's the grass too high there. I actually thought this was a haunted graveyard so I doubled back like a detective n got a little scared man. The broke open gate is welcoming but it's a little to scary for me. It looks like low income housing across the street so Idk if this is y this place is so neglected or not. Either way, the project hood across the street look allot safer than this place. Man this is a disgrace I couldn't help but look again an research, but it's nothing here say it's haunted lol. It looks like the grave keeper AND the owner both died and took the city inspectors too the grave with them. Either way the property value in the whole neighborhood probably suck cause this place. In some places the grass knee high so u could be walking on a body!!! Smh, if the city need a lawn mower man look me up I maybe still feel like donating, smh. I have never reviewed a grave yard but this one is so bad, I had to leave...
Read moreToday was heavy! I've been doing a lot of ancestral work and retracing my roots. My grandmother died in 1966. I never knew her but learned she was buried here. I read the other reviews and thought to myself uhoh is this place going to be able to help me. I called yesterday and left a message. This morning Judy called and within 1 minute was able to tell me that my grandmother was there and where. My grandmother was buried in a public lot because my family did not have money (something I never knew) to buy a private plot. There is no grave marking but the place on these grounds where public graves are is absolutely BREATHTAKING! The groundsman left me alone and I wept for all the Black ancestors who did not have money to bury their loved ones privately. But I am grateful that Mt. Lawn Cemetery still honors those by keeping their records and maintaining the grounds. I was overwhelmed by the energy of the public grave site, not to mention it rained as soon as I walked onto the soil and stopped once I stood under the tree and thanked it for sprouting forth roots of love for those buried there. I will upload a photo of the tree that governs the public grave sites....
Read moreI'm only giving them 1 star bc it will not let leave a review without doing so but this place is completely horrible. My family has had a plot there since ny uncle passed in the 70's. We buried my cousin yesterday & that's when we found out my grandmother casket was crooked because they took inches off to bury someone else in another plot, so instead of my cousin going on top of my grandmother he went beside her. When we got to the cemetery they had just begun to dig, so we had to leave & come back. The had the nerve to leave him in the hurse for 2 hours, no chairs or a tent for us. Called they're lawyer on us because we wanted our money back & they're lawyer told him to not even cash our check to have it right back. This place is horrible & had been this way for years. They don't bother to clean the cemetery or anything. It's unfortunate we're stuck with...
