Wawa I want to express how extremely disappointed I am with how my son was treated at Wawa. Your manager Derek mishandled a simple situation. Something that required a basic conversation could have led to a catastrophic event for my son, for me, for my family because of how Derek a trained manager mishandled this situation. My name is Marquita Lewis and I am advocating for my son Amir Jackson On December 17,2024 approximately between 7:30 AM-8:10am. My son Amir Jackson (A BLACK YOUNG AMERICAN CITIZEN); walked into the Wawa to grab some snacks before going work. Since Wawa doesn’t have baskets to hold items while browsing he put several items in his pocket because he couldn’t hold everything without dropping it. Once he was ready to check out, he proceeded to scan all items for purchase at one of the self-check out stations. Using his digital device as a form of payment, he proceeded to tap his phone as a form of payment and walked off, not getting a receipt. Basically, tap and go. Focused on getting to work he did not notice that the payment did not go through on his phone. It was at this point that your trained Manager Derek did a disservice to my son. With the knowledge that my son’s card didn’t go through. Instead of notifying him that the payment did not process, Derek let my son leave the store, fully aware that the items were not paid for due to a technical failure, and called the police on him. Given history and young Black males this could have turned out more tragically than it did but my son is traumatized and so am I. Derek never made my son aware that the purchase was declined. He didn’t even give my son the opportunity to try tapping his device again or try a different payment method. Derek did nothing to help my son fix the matter. Instead he allowed my son to walk out and preceded to call the police on him. He called the police on him for an $8 technical issue that he (Derek) was fully aware of how to resolve it, putting my son’s life in danger. Also wasting tax payer dollars as 8 to 10 cops were called who proceeded to follow him and his coworkers to his job. Letting a customer leave with unpaid items, calling the cops who used excessive force, and wasting taxpayers money does not sound like the correct and appropriate way to resolve this situation. My son is traumatized and so am I. My son was locked up. My son was fingerprinted, my son now has a mugshot. My son as a young black male was scared for his life. The cops accused him of stealing without giving him a chance to explain but your trained manager Derek already knew exactly what happened. All of this did not need to happen. My child is just stepping into young adult life, at 19 years of age. He is scared because Your trained manager Derek refused to have a conversation with him. What made this matter even worse was that this is standard Wawa procedure. I called the Wawa the next day to inquire about the procedures and methods that are taken in a situation like this anonymously. And the manager told me, “yes this happens all the time at self check out hahaha. Normally if we see that a card declined and if the customer is approachable, not a threat, we will let them know they need to finish payment process.” So if they are not “approachable” the police are called. They will proceed to let them walk out with unpurchased items and they will have to call the police on the person because they are deemed “unapproachable”. So, Derek was trained to treat my son this way, to scare him, to traumatize him, to call the police on him and have them accuse him...

Read moreThe service here is terrible -0/10. I went to pick up an online food order, I greeted a supposed supervisor/manager several times with "Hi and Hello," yet she blatantly ignored me. Whether she was having a rough day or not, her attitude was extremely poor and hostile when she eventually acknowledged me. We all experience tough days, but it's no reason to spoil the experience for the next person. If you lack the proper people skills, customer service might not be the best...
