GameStop — Local services in Davenport

I don't understand the "membership" scam they're trying to sell but today the associate tried to sign me up on the gamestop membership by saying if I signed up today they would save me $40 on today's purchase. My original purchase price for the items I had was roughly $175. After the associate added the membership the total out the door price skyrocketed to $195!! Where is my $40 savings i asked?? He said he managed to save me $2 on one of the games I bought. When I pushed him on where his math was on the original $40 in savings he tried to sell me on with this membership he just quickly removed the membership altogether.
