Hickory Garden Restaurant — Restaurant in Davenport

I haven't had this in ages. I stopped regularly patronizing about 8 yrs ago and now I remember why. They charge a convenience fee if you don't pay in cash. Although I DID pay in cash, I was not given the correct change. Two gyros each with fries and a side was $35.20. I gave her $40, and the change given back was 60 cents short, despite having the amount due right there on the register. No receipt was given either. If the food is going to be that expensive, please actually give correct change and proof of purchase!!! The quality of food is teetering on being below par. I've always thought the gyro meat is sliced too thick BUT it has a decent flavor, so, I just cut it up and add feta. Fries are simply ok. However. The potato salad is absolutely disgusting, deplorable, and super SWEET 🤮The ratio of relish to everything else is definitely off! There are several improvements to be made here, but I really doubt I'll try again any time soon to see if...

It is so sad to see what once was an excellent restaurant slip so far as this one has. Meatloaf dinner was awful. If there was any meat in it at all, it was lost in the soggy bread and salt. Salt was the main over riding flavor of the whole meal. The gravy, the mashed (instant? )potatoes, the soup and yes the meat loaf. The only thing that wasn't swimming in salt was the commercially prepared fried chicken. No seriously, we left the meal where it was and ate at Steak and Shake. I hate giving negative reviews especially to a place that once was really good but this meal was beyond bad. One other note, MSG is not a substitute for flavor and I truly wish the use of MSG powder in restaurants had to be noted on the menu. If they obtain a competent chef and quit cutting corners I hope they announce it, the waitstaff was excellent and in no way responsible for this ...

This was the first time we visited here and we were NOT disappointed! The dining area is set up like like a dining room. It felt very comfortable. The people that are eating are very friendly and easily spark up a conversation with you making your wait for your food seem shorter than it was (and it was a short wait anyway). The food was hot, delicious and correct as ordered. We will definitely be back and may have made this our new go to place. Not to forget to mention that the prices were on par with other dining places. Their menu is very extensive so there is something for just about every taste. You won't be disappointed when you give this place a try. The only thing that disappointed me was the booth seating is not set up to accommodate larger people or women with a larger chest.
