Golden Dew Jewelry Store — Local services in Ellicott City

I hate giving bad reviews for small businesses, especially when the owners seem quite friendly but I did not have a good experience when I visited them.

This is a rather small jewelry shop that is actually located inside or connected to a Lotte (not a standalone building) so it wasn't very easy to find at first. While the owner was very nice, I felt like he might have been a bit too aggressive with trying to "fix" my platinum hoop earring that was accidentally bent by a plier when attempting to close it. I visited two other jewelers beforehand, who each told me that there really wasn't much that could be done, and that if we were to do something we might risk bending it more. They were right....

The owner seemed like a kindly older Korean man, who greeted me immediately as I walked in. He didn't seem to speak English that well (I didn't speak Korean) but understood it well enough. After I showed him my hoop earring, he said that he could fix it for $50 and then after I said that I might want to think about it a bit more (I had really intended to visit different jewelers to get a quote more or less), he said that he could do it for $40 or $30, and when I still refused "how much" (did I want to pay). Since he was rather pushy about it and said that he could "fix it today" for $30. I assented. But...I really should have stopped at the second jeweler I visited (St. John's Jewelers) who managed to smooth out the bent part (which was really only the small portion that went into the ear) quite well for free, and I was already quite satisfied with it, and left things as it was.

While he did try to "fix" my hoop earring in his workshop with flame and jeweler's pliers, I feel like he really didn't do all that much - basically nothing (that the previous jeweler didn't already do).

And in fact, he actually bent the (entire) earring even more as he also messed with the rest of the hoop that didn't need to be smoothed out at all. Now, the earring, which was once a perfect circle like its pair, is kind of an odd slightly misshapen circle. On top of that, there are now visible dents from where he tried to straighten it with his jewelry pliers. He ended up charging me $20 for the "work".

Well, I guess the blemishes probably aren't really that noticeable when they are in the ear. The old adage "don't fix what isn't broken" definitely applies here. Not the best experience. Wouldn't recommend trying to get your...

A wonderful experience at Golden Dew. The owners were extremely helpful and the pricing was great. I purchased the ring and the diamond from two different places and they were more than happy to set the piece together for me. They gave me great advice about the prongs, depth, and how the diamond sets into the ring itself.
