I really wanted to like Borderlands, I really did.
I can only speak to the part of comic books because that is what I was there for. They seem to have a lot of selection for games and their staff seems more well versed in games (typically more money in that than comics for most stores). Because of that I have given them two stars for the benefit of the doubt. The rest has been my experience…
I moved to the area recently and wanted to start a comic book pull list (comic book subscription for those not familiar). I went in and gave them a list of a few titles, they asked if standard covers instead of variants were fine, I said I want standard covers anyway. My list appears to be set up just fine.
First week my list isn’t set aside for me, it happens, I am new after all. So, I go to their shelves and grab the books that were on my list and purchase them.
Then that first week becomes my routine for many weeks (I stopped keeping track around 5 and looked for other places). One or more of the items on my list wouldn’t be there and I would have to go grab it off the shelf assuming they weren’t already sold out (sometimes they were and that was a whole other issue but I won’t get into it this is long as is). The times that my comics were there they were variants that I stated I didn’t want and when I went to go grab a a regular one there wasn’t one on the shelf making me feel like an afterthought.
On top of all that the customer service was lacking. There were two employees that worked the closing shift there on Wednesday (new comic book day) that were always eager to leave. I understand wanting to leave work, we’re all tired at the end of our shifts but they must really not like their jobs. By the time I got off work and got there there was only about 30 minutes till closing.
I walk in they say “Just so you know it’s only 30 minutes till closing.” No problem . Of course my pull list isn’t complete so I got to the shelf to pull aside the books I want but while I’m looking after 5 minutes they say “Only 25 minutes before closing.”This keeps going on every 5 minutes. I think this must be a fluke but it isn’t.
This process was also repeated every week despite them seeing me every Wednesday, forgetting my pull list every week and then hounding me to leave. They seem passionate about games and collectibles but certainly not comics.
I hope this business thrives as it seems like a decent enough place for board and card game enthusiasts but if you enjoy reading and or collecting comics this isn’t the best place. Sorry for the long post and thanks...
Read moreBorderlands is consistently one of the best shops around, not just Greenville or the Carolinas but nationwide.
I travel to major cities frequently and visit shops whenever there is time. Greenville South Carolina somehow has a top-notch store! A long time ago a guy named Stan took over a Heroes Aren't Hard to Find and the evolution began. More recently new owners (a husband-wife team) have been showing every business how to build a community outside of "regulars" by partnering with theaters, blood drives, St. Baldrick's and making real EVENTS for the locals.
They've got a great wall of comic books - and I mean 40 feet of shelves maybe? - and carry the flag-bearers - Superman, Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man, etc, as well as smaller publishers and limited run books. Comic book toys surround the comics for people into that; there's even a Doctor Who shelf if you have time.
A quarter of the store on the left side in the front is dedicated to gaming and one guy bragged that they have every single Warhammer figure available. No way for me to tell but I do believe it. Pathfinder, LOTR, books, etc. The back 1/3 of the store is for table-top miniature gaming - Warhammer and other things I would guess. There are regular nights for that and tournaments sometimes.
I visit Borderlands with my young son and the staff always goes out of their way to make my visit, and my son's visit, a good experience. Even during their big events - I seem to always stumble in without realizing there's some frenzy like a Walking Dead signing or cosplay blood drive - the staff is awesome and the comic book guys, gamers and...
Read moreHad an uncomfortable feeling about this place ever since the owner tried to argue me down over Superman just because my boyfriend politely told him that I wasn't a fan after he (the owner) mentioned a new release they were having at the time. The next day I came back to exchange what I had previously bought and the minute I walked in, I saw him whispering something to the employee beside him while glaring me down and stopped right when I got in front of them (obviously i'm the topic of the conversation, they couldn't have made it more obvious). Ever since then, I get ignored when I come in the store. not even a "hello" or "Welcome to Borderlands" all because I don't care to argue over fictional characters. When I called in to complain about how I was sen by multiple staff on separate occasion and not asked ONCE if I needed help, he (the owner) used the excuse of "well, my staff is tired. They have been doing a reset all weekend etc)" not realizing I actually experienced the same thing with him. Nowadays, i just go to look at the figures to see what is new in stock and just order them from another store. I will not spend money in a store that will not even acknowledge my presence or anyone I come with or a snooty store owner. Richard's is...
