So as a visitor to Greenville with plans to move, I've been asking people for recommendations on where I should eat. Well this place was recommended and I can see why.
First off, they only take cash and don't accept tips. That's a massive green flag in my book if a business can stay in business (and incredibly busy) only operating in cash and the fact that they don't accept tips tells me their staff is well paid (and by the service, well treated too. They all seemed to be quite pleasant despite being lunch rush on a Wednesday.)
I asked for a recommendation and got the gyro plate with a piece of pistachio baklava which came out to just over $15. For the quantity and quality of food I received, that is an absolute deal. After I paid, I was expecting them to ask for a name or give me a table number or something so they can keep track of who ordered what. After all, you don't get seated before ordering, you order then go find a seat. Nope. Somehow, despite 3 people taking orders and the kitchen being full, they just. Idk. Remember who ordered what and go find them. That tells me that they pay attention to their customers and given how busy it was, they clearly have their crap together.
The food came out relatively quickly, probably a little over 5-6 minutes, and I tried everything individually before constructing my pita. The falafel was fantastic. Crispy on the outside, perfectly fluffy inside, with a heavy aroma of Mediterranean spices and a great taste to boot. The gyro meat was super tender and very flavorful. I've had a lot of good gyro meat. In my experience, it's usually really good no matter where you go (with a few exceptions of course), but I'd place their meat in the top 3 I've ever had. The hummus was wonderful and the baklava overall was probably a 7.5/10 (I rate 5 as the average, so this is pretty good, just not enough to blow me away). With the fresh veggies on the side, I constructed what was overall probably the best pita I've ever had. Nothing individually was explicitly the best I've ever had, but everything on it's own was pretty exceptional and came together to make a fantastic overall experience.
I've tried a few highly recommended places in my short time in Greenville, but I expect to be a regular when I do eventually move here, and this place will definitely be at the top of my recommendations for anyone visiting Greenville with a hankering for Mediterranean food.
Overall rating: 92/100. Simply...
Read moreI'm writing this in the store right now. It's not the first time I've been here, or even the 50th. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and I'll be coming here as long as they're open. That's the kind of customer The Pita House makes out of you, because it's a family-run business with an emphasis on quality food and great service, and that's stuck with me. Consistency is always a very prominent feature here at The Pita House. If you find an item that you enjoy, you can come back and order that same menu item assured that it will taste as good as the last time you got it, and everything tastes good.
If you're adventurous, try something like the stuffed grape leaves or the falafel sandwich. If you're like me and enjoy playing it safe (up until recently), the grilled cheese pita is actually no slouch. That was my go-to as a kid, and the grilled cheese pita is still something I order alongside the shawarma pita today. I attribute this to their freshly made pita and whatever good-as-all-getout cheese they melt in there. It's a little crispy, but still has the softness you expect from pita.
I normally do not order dessert from a restaurant, a habit I owe to my parents, but under no circumstance do I leave The Pita House without at least two Lady Fingers - not the British kind, but the Lebanese variety - and that's if I'm not feeling ravenous. Like everything else here, they're freshly made and have a perfect texture.
The environment is friendly, suitably quiet for an understandably busy restaurant, and the staff is always friendly. Ziod, the owner, is a quiet but exceptionally friendly man, and if you ever have the chance to meet him you'll understand why this restaurant has operated successfully here in Greenville for longer than I've been alive.
If you're a local, come here at least twice a month. If you're from out of town, don't you dare miss it. You could certainly do worse, but take it from someone who grew up here, it's difficult to do better than...
Read moreThis is kind of an odd review considering I've been eating here since I was a kid, and I will start by saying their food is fantastic! This was my first less than enjoyable experience. I ordered a large meal for my family and ordered an extra bag of pita bread to eat everything with since we like our pita wraps and dips. Well I got home and they forgot the bag of pita bread which is no big issue since I ended up going to the local supermarket and bought some pita to replace it. Anyways, I gave them a call and the son of the owner answered. I told him what they forgot and he said I could come grab it, I told him I was 15 miles away and it wasn't worth the ride so he said he'd take care of the next meal I ordered which I felt was very generous and said he'd take down my info. I had a bunch of leftover meat and dips from my last visit so I figured I'd go up and grab a plate of grape leaves to go with the leftovers. I arrive and Ziad (owner/father) was there and he asked what I wanted and I told him the situation. Ziad seemed pretty annoyed that his son offered a plate for them forgetting my bag of pita, after I ordered and was waiting on the plate he kept making comments quite loudly about how he was giving away a 15 dollar plate for a 3 dollar mistake. It was a pretty embarrassing situation, and considering I've spent literally thousands of dollars with Ziad at his family's restaurant over years and years It made me feel like the situation was uncalled for. I write this review only in the hopes that Ziad thinks about the loyalty that the Greenville community has towards his restaurant. I love their food, and the people are usually very kind, but after a situation like the one I had I don't feel that I can go there any longer without feeling unwelcome, which sucks the most since The Pita House is a staple...
