I visited here in 2020 and always meant to write a review. When I recently noticed there were some negative reviews of this place, I was inspired to offer my experience.
Of note, especially to those complaining they weren't greeted: There is a small, separate front area of this shop in which to browse as soon as you step in the door. This is a great way to judge your interest and give you the opportunity to exit if the stock or prices are not exactly what you expected. Don't expect to be rushed at the door as you walk in. The small area precludes it, and the owners are respectful enough of distancing to wait until you've entered the larger and main building.
The larger building is still a small, tidy shop, brimming with fascinating fossils, rocks, and crystals (thoughtfully labeled as to origin) and other treats sprinkled throughout. The brothers who own the shop initiated conversation with us, offering further information on many of the items that caught our eyes. They were both so enthusiastic - even after SO many years in business - that we learned a class's worth of facts and location trivia in the 45 minutes we looked around. It was an Experience, as geology should be, rather than just a trip to a gift shop.
We sincerely enjoyed our day at Dixie Gem, and the brothers were what put it over the top. We were impressed with the exquisite and unique quality pieces and the selection on offer, and bought several beautiful items. I'd encourage anyone with genuine interest to visit this shop. And my advice is: This is one of those "Be Here Now" situations. Be present. Appreciate the Earth in a whole new way! And leave the coffee and phone in the car. Thanks...
Read moreWas so exited at first to see a gem store on my vacation to this area. I read that it was local owned, wanted to support small business. As we entered, an older gentleman walked up to ask if we were enjoying the abnormal heat suggesting it was due to our current president's hot air that he was blowing. My response was that there's a lot of hot air being blown everywhere, then I walked away from him in an attempt to look at the gemstones. I felt immediately accosted about politics while trying to enjoy a local gem store. The store was dirty and dusty and prices were somewhat fair on some items, but inconsistently abnormally high on other items. As I continue to browse, the same gentleman walked back up to me to tell me a story about how the hurricane that occurred in North Carolina, Florida and Saint Croix last year were caused by our president we well. At that point, my friend put the item she was going to purchase back on the shelf, and we walked out. Business employees and business employees should not bring it politics or conspiracy theories to their customers, regardless of who or what the topic is. His insistence on slamming the current presidental administration was obsessive and the way he followed us in the store set off a high degree of creep factor. Very...
Read moreIgnore the 1 star reviews. I have dropped in this store every now and then for over 20 years. They have some of the best selection and more than reasonable prices. Expect to pay 20-30% or more in the stores downtown compared to here. Trust me, I’ve compared prices. If you want the two nice and knowledgeable store owners to talk with you, you have to ask questions about what you’re looking for or looking at, and they’ll be happy to tell you. No, there’s no elevator music in the store, so you need to go in expecting a shopping atmosphere you may not be used to. When I’m in the store, usually one or the other of the brothers has something neat they bring over to show me. Other times, they are right by looking at what I’m looking at, and no I don’t believe for a second they think I’m going to steal from them. They probably want to tell me more about what I seem to be interested, and they are certainly able to. They are walking encyclopedias of information when it comes to their specialized field. I will continue to support this cute small business as long as it’s there and...
