I had to go in for my annual blood test today, which Iâve been putting off because of some bad experiences in the past (and youâll see why).
I warned the phlebotomist upfront about my anxiety and fear of needles, but she seemed like she had dealt with worseâpeople even fainting, she said. I reassured her that I wasnât that bad.
The first attempt was in my right forearm, but she couldnât get the vein. So, I suggested trying my right hand because I have a pretty obvious vein there. She tried, but then said she blew the vein. At this point, my anxiety was rising, and Iâve realized my response to fear isnât âfight or flightââitâs more like âfreeze.â
The third attempt, in my left forearm, was successful, but it came with an unexpected lecture. As the needle was still in my arm, she started criticizing me for being too stiff and leaning back too far in the chair. I tried to explain that I was doing my best, but her tone shifted, and I could tell my fear response was frustrating her. She said I was affecting the flow of blood into the tube. Honestly, it felt like a switch flipped in her, and suddenly I was the problem.
I was stuck, the needle in my arm, and just asked, âWhat do you want me to do about it right now?â She didnât really have an answer but thankfully said she had enough blood.
I went in trying to be kind and considerate by giving her a heads-up about my past experiences. But this interaction really reinforced my fear of lab work.
Iâm hoping she was just having a bad day or maybe was new to the job and frustrated with the situation. Still, the takeaway is simple: treat people with respect. Whateverâs going on in your personal life shouldnât be taken out on others, especially when theyâre already in a vulnerable situation.
Either way, I really hope her day...
Read moreReceptionist at Gurnee Immediate Care I recently had an extremely disappointing experience at Gurnee Immediate Care, largely due to the unprofessional behavior of the receptionist. From the moment we arrived, her attitude was rude, dismissive, and completely uncalled for. It was clear she was not interested in providing any form of customer service, let alone a courteous or helpful interaction.
Not only did she speak to us in a condescending tone, but she also seemed irritated by simple questions and requests. We were made to feel like an inconvenience rather than patients seeking care. This kind of behavior is not acceptable in any professional setting, especially one where patients are already dealing with stressful health concerns.
It's unfortunate that such a negative experience overshadowed the rest of our visit. While the medical staff seemed professional, the initial interaction with the receptionist left a sour taste and made the whole experience uncomfortable. I hope Gurnee Immediate Care addresses this issue and provides better training or guidance for their front-desk staff.
I would highly recommend that potential patients look elsewhere if they expect basic respect and professionalism when visiting a...
Read moreI went in for a case of food poisoning and was seen by Dr. Hassib. She was incredibly unkind and disregarded all my concerns. She told me I could not have food poisoning or any bacterial infection because I was not vomiting and did not have a constant fever (even though I told her I had a fever overnight and had chills on and off).
She told me to go to a GI to check for Crohns or colitis. Those are really scary diseases to just carelessly throw at your patients!! She also gave me no options or advice on pain management even though I told her I was having really horrible stomach cramping from the food poisoning (which again she didnât believe I had). I told her I was breastfeeding and she basically told I could take nothing and sent me home with a stool kit.
In the end, my stool sample came back positive for bacteria (a bacteria from undercooked meat aka food poisoning like I said!!!!) and Iâm finally on antibiotics. If she ever reads this review, I hope she learns to listen to her patients more and be more empathetic. I was in so much pain and her horrible attitude only made me feel worse. If you go to this immediate care, ask beforehand if the provider you will have to see if Dr. Hassib, if it is, go...
