Food Lion — Local services in Hamlet

Food Lion is underrated sometimes. I don't know how they've managed to stay afloat and avoid the fate met by Winn-Dixie, Bi-Lo and several other grocery chains that got steam rolled by Walmart during the previous decade's economic downturn. But, I am glad they made it. Walmart still has them beat on some prices but their produce usually looks way better than Walmart's and the prices on fresh foods like produce are always comparable if not better. They had delicious red grapes on sale today for 99 cents per pound. Can't beat that. Also, if you are vegan, their tofu is cheaper than Walmart's and they are the only grocery store near me that sells all three varieties: silken, firm and extra firm. (Try being vegan in the south -- especially in North or South Carolina - the barbecue capitals of the world. Pork is king.) They also offer a few brands of dairy milk and cream alternatives that Walmart doesn't. They may be overpriced on some of the dry goods but I like what the offer for fresh foods. Great variety of items. Most of the staff are helpful but I did go recently to purchase jerk marinade in their self proclaimed "International Aisle" and couldn't find it. I requested assistance from one of the staff, who appeared to have just helped someone else. He stated he was going for help and NEVER RETURNED!!! So I waited with my granddaughter and my disabled brother for about 15 minutes before I gave up. What bothers me is that I was in the store for an additional 40 minutes shopping(approx $250) and no one still tried to rectify it. The management and cashiers are friendly and smile say hello. The stockers gladly help and even go out of there way to help. Not just say it's on isle "7 on the on the left" they will actually walk talk and help and help you look no matter how old or young you are. Because I was looking for something and there was some of us of different ages. I really didn't expect that. It was nice. Something my kids loved found they loved in Alabama but nobody carried around here. Management asked for a bar code it's been in stocks since! I Highly recommend it!
