Updated from 3 to 4 stars due to recent improvements with staffing the registers.
Pros: Nice aesthetic. It's a cute store. Beer cave and food services are both tasty and unique. Community events can be fun. Several of the employees are amazing, polite and very helpful (they know who they are). Produce selection is solid and fresh. Love the pick and prep. They have a great selection of local gifts and plants. Supporting a Carolina-owned company that seems to take better care of their staff than others chains.
Cons: Lowe's is undeniably more expensive than other stores like Walmart up the road (except for certain sales). They cannot adequately staff the check out lanes and rely on four self-checkout stations. One of the four is almost always broken. The technology for self-checkout is incredibly outdated and frustrating for both customers and staff ("PUT THE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA"). The lines are very long at random hours due to the above points. Several of the employees are seriously rude and deliberately unhelpful. They need to go. A few months ago, I saw a rat running down aisle 4. It happens in SC, but the staff didn't really care when I told them. I have had to make 5+ returns in the past year due to expired or opened products.
I have tried really hard to love this Lowe's. It's Carolina-owned, cute and fun to shop at. It's not all Lowe's... The one by my old place in Lexington was fantastic. This Lowe's has some issues, particularly with technology and the check out process. I have no problem paying a little extra, but when the lines are shorter elsewhere and the employees seem happier, I start to wonder why I should pay the premium.
For five stars: Fix the check out situation. Update the technology. Make sure your goods are not expired. Some staff need to get out of...
Read moreI was disappointed when BiLo Hanahan closed, not because I necessarily loved BiLo, but because my local grocery options had suddenly been whittled down to the Food Lion and Walmart stores on Red Bank Rd. Not that there's anything wrong with that--Food Lion has delicious tomatoes, and Walmart has ultra-cheap prices (and they never run out of stuff)--but the BiLo at Tanner Ford was just more convenient.
When the new Lowes store opened, they were still renovating the old BiLo space, so the whole interior was rough and unfinished. I was not impressed with the selection, the physical condition of the store, or the shopping experience in general. Still, the people were incredibly nice, and I was glad to have a store close by for late night food runs. The fact that Lowes is a local chain, indigenous to the Carolinas, was also a plus.
Boy, what a difference a few months made! By the time Lowe's was finished converting the store, it was spectacular. It's a beautiful store, filled with nice touches like a nifty little beer/wine/coffee bar, a you-pick-em herb garden, and a tomato "buffet" that lets you sample the wares before containerizing your selection.
It's also a safe store, with a well-lighted parking lot (with piped-in music!) and a grocery pickup area, so the war department loves it! (i,e., my wife)
I'm now spoiled. Lowes is my favorite grocery store, better than Albertson's, Goodings, Publix, Ralph's, or Ingles. And the employees are terrific. Highest marks....
Read moreThe Tanner Plantation BiLo is now a Lowe's Foods. This was what we jokingly called "the snooty Bi-Lo" as compared to the Goose Creek Bi-Lo, now a Food Lion and that's a whole other review.
This store continues the high quality of deli and produce items we knew this location for, all lovely and fresh. Prices seem about the same though I don't think I saw generic store-brand items in many categories. My eggs are Lowe's brand. They left the layout mostly the same, so it's not hard to find what you need.
Get the app so you can use the online coupons; I got a 12-pack of Blue Moon for $11.99 after taking 3 minutes to set up the app with my new Lowe's member card. That's 1990s pricing!
The registers were fully manned and moving swiftly, not more than 2 people in proper socially distanced lines, and the employees were smiling (behind their masks), friendly, and helpful. Hope it's not just new store smell or the holiday season and the great attitudes and service continue. They don't carry Canadian bacon, but they had cubed ham so my Christmas morning Eggs Benedict casserole will still happen.
This store is right on my way home so I think this will be my regular grocery. Especially if they keep making with the...
