Walmart — Local services in Harlan

Our Wal-Mart always has empty shelves. I was there this evening, it was pitiful. People walking around trying to find normal shopping items. We we're all talking about having to leave and go to another store. In the last 3/4 years they have opened up 5 Dollar General Stores, all around us. They tell us we can't have a Super Center because we don't have enough people. I'm pretty sure people are NOT driving here from other states and buying our Wal-Mart out. If you want to see your neighbor go to Middlesbrough, go to Corbin or go to London. The problem with this is these stores are anywhere from a 45 minute to almost a two hour drive ONE WAY. My experience this evening was very low merchandise or completely out of merchandise. ONE regular checkout open and ONE 20 item checkout. I do not use self checkouts because it is not convenient, a large part of the time you will need a CSM. I truly think it's a shame that HARLAN COUNTY KENTUCKY IS TREATED THIS WAY! We definitely need another store here, with no competition except the Dollar, I personally think Wal-Mart thinks it's just fine to do this to our town. Most WalMart's are top notch but the one in Harlan I think has had the same employees for so long they feel like they aren't there at the customer's behest anymore. For example the lady that was over the self checkout tonight locked eyes with me and like we was raised to do... I greeted her with a smile and hi how are you doing. Her response was an annoyed look and just looked away. Is it that hard to practice common decency anymore?

Aside from feeling lesser than from most of the employees; and I want to point out that it wasn't all of them. There was this one lady who was helpful and answered my questions with a smile. But aside from the employees the store was decently stocked and clean enough. So as long as your not having a bad day and want it to get worse then Harlan Walmart is probably the place for you.

P.S. The self checkout lady wasn't wearing a mask. Not sure if the employees are required like the...

It's sad that our local Walmart no longer has any competition. It's been this way since the coal mining industry has disappeared. Our Walmart doesn't have the great discounts like other do because we have no other option. I am glad we actually have this store but it just seems unfair in ways. Alas, I do visit other Walmarts when I can because I dislike doing business with a store that has almost no compassion. Very unfortunate and I do hate giving such a review as this but I am who I am.
