August 2022: I am updating my review in re: our experience with my adult daughter purchasing her 'forever' violin. We thought we had better be thorough and went to several violin shops, some very well known ones in Salt Lake City in addition to Classical Strings. Our experience was that the selection of instruments at Classical Strings is far superior to any other shop we went to. Grover gets individual violins from widely disparate sources so you will find violins of many different ages, types and sound profiles. At the other shops we went to, most of the instruments sounded the same. Not at Classical Strings!
It was also our experience that you get a higher quality instrument at a lower price than you do at other shops. Grover let my daughter take all the time she needed to play different instruments and after playing 9 -10 different violins, she found one that was perfect for her. Grover helped her find the right bow to match the violin and he includes a violin case as well in the price.
If you are looking for a violin, whether you are a beginner or a professional, I would hurry right in to Classical Strings! Highly recommend. I am a violin teacher and have been in to the shop several times. Grover is extremely knowledgeable on repairs, adjustments, and string instruments and accessories in general. He has a wide selection of quality instruments for your perusal in different price ranges. You can make an appointment and come in to spend all the time you need to try out the instruments. I have brought in several instruments for repair and they sound great now! He is very fair on his prices, and kind and patient. Don't hesitate to come in to...
Read moreOkay if I could give Classical Stings and Grover a 10 star review, I would. I'm seriously happy - thrilled actually about the quality work I've had done here. I was nervous to leave my violin because I need it so often, so both times I had repair work done on it, he let me make an appt and just stay there while it was being repaired (oh bless, who does that, so kind). Cost - very reasonable. If you take your instrument to a music store you will pay double what Grover charges (and then they will actually bring your instrument to Grover to fix it - seriously). Time- they're fast. He fitted a new bridge on my violin today while I waited and I also left a bass with a potential for decapitation and a fully decapitated cello there (I'm a music teacher, kids break things). They will be done by tomorrow. Again, oh bless. The best thing... my violin which I love and didn't think it was possible that it would sound better, sounds amazing!! I don't want him to get a big head, but seriously he's a genius! Can't wait to go to rehearsal tonight!!
Oh... Also if you live too far away (I live 30 minutes south of Harrisville), his daughter Rebecca (love her) will save you some drive time and meet you in Hooper! They're the best! Thanks Classical...
Read moreThe first time we needed classical strings my son had completely broke the neck off his viola two days before his solo and ensemble. His teacher recommended classical strings. I wasn't really excited when I found out it was a significant drive to get there. But not only were they able to fix the viola beautifully, but it was done in time for his performance! I felt like the price was fair, but I didn't really know. Today I needed their expertise again when my other son broke the tuning peg on his cello. (Apparently my boys are hard on their instruments!) I tried to take it to another place that was easier to get too. Not only did they want to charge me 3 times more than Grover they were going to take 5 days. I made the drive up to classical strings. They had it fixed in 20 minutes at a much more affordable price. I will now always take our instrument...
