This is regarding my experience with SVDP of Hartwell and NOT the church. Reached out to this chapter of SVDP, in NE GA for help. The man who answered the phone asked me how I heard about the charity, I informed him that a relative of mine had gotten help from svdp in the past. For some really weird reason he wanted my relative's name and information. I did not feel comfortable, but I figured since it was a Christian organization, Maybe it was okay. When inquiring about the type of assistance I needed, he came across more judgmental, than helpful. He was discouraging, and told me that they "can't help everybody" and that this chapter of St Vincent de Paul could "ONLY help those in Hartwell" (he could have stated that during our initial conversation, instead of going on to make me feel like a mouse). I was humiliated, and embarrassed. And then I felt guilty because I had actually shared my relative's information with him. This particular relative definitely has given to many charitable organizations, and felt that svdp had been loving and kind to her in the past. But for me, not the case from this particular man. I wish that the volunteers could be vetted a little bit better, because this guy was insensitive. I have my suspicions as to what he meant by "we can't help everybody," and why he was initially discouraging in the first place. I get that not every organization can help the entire universe, but every single organization can certainly treat people with dignity, even when they have to say no, and there's no reason to be intrusive or overstep boundaries when collecting...
