Synopsis: I, a long time customer, was treated as a criminal by an employee after OVERCHARGING myself out of laziness in the self checkout line based off of my physical appearance.

My family has been visiting this island twice a year for 19 years now, we are creatures of habit we stay in the same house, we go to the same beaches and we shop at the same grocery store.

I've never had a problem with this store (other then it being very busy and slow) until today.

Tonight, June 2nd, 2024, I went in to buy ingredients to make my family dinner. First of all there selection was quite lacking, which is pretty normal for a grocery store on the island but they were missing ingredients like coriander, cashews and lemongrass, which I feel especially on an island with a lot of Asian tourists and residence was strange.

As I was checking out in the self check out line I rang up my five chillies (three different types of chilis) all as habineros (they are the most expensive chili's at most grocery stores). I do this so I don't have to weigh out each individual one but I'm not stealing even the .25 cent difference from the company. In fact I'm over charging myself by sometimes close to a dollar.

The lady working the self check outline saw me do this and came over to scold me, I tried to explain that I was being lazy and over charged myself instead but she would not hear it and ended up typing each chili in by hand walking back and forth between her binder to check each code number instead of just looking up the name. At the end of this interaction she looked at one of her colleagues and told them "watch him" and went to get her manager who rung up each individual item for me by hand to make sure I didn't purposefully over charge myself again I guess?

This ended up taking close to 25 minutes and in the end she had messed up the codes so many times that it wouldn't let me check out and she had to go get her manager again.

I don't feel asthough I look like a wealthy person although I am quite wealthy. I have long hair, piercings, tatoos and often wear metal or punk shirts. I feel as though this employee would not hear me out baised on my appearance, and specifically watched me because she felt as though I would steal.

I feel as though I was treated as a criminal for trying to over charge myself and looking...

Extremely rude customer service the reason for my 1 star rating. Where is the hawaii aloha??? I went to the customer service lady this morning and she was extremely rude with her tone in her response to me. I paid 6.99 yesterday for some mochi and it was expired that day and when I went to eat it, it was.moldy and old so that 6.99 I spent here was wasted on OLD MOCHI. I went to ask for a new fresh MOCHI today and she very rudely responded to me I cant do anything without a receipt or the old.mochi, why would I keep the old.mochi it was disgusting and old. When you purchase something at a store you expect it to not be moldy and old. I thought they could have been more accommodating and given me a new fresh MOCHI, but instead she was super rude to me and shook her hands at me since I didnt have a receipt either. I wont be shopping here much anymore! And definitely wont be buying any MOCHI from here ever again. The extremely Rude manner in which the "customer service" lady communicated to me was completely unacceptable and unnecessary. She should.not be working in customer service if she cant handle her customers who are paying extremely high prices in this store especiqlly, in a nice way. I am a white local who was born and raised in hawaii, and she was seemingly Hawaiian looking, to me her rude attitude toward me, a white local, felt really racist honestly. And this store should not be selling old expired products that arent even edible. $7 for some old.mochi that I had to throw in the trash what...

The Foodland is the only true grocery store in the area. We often partake when working on the island. Breakfast by the pound not a bad deal for big eaters, poke bar, and good ancillary items. They close at 9pm so plan ahead. Even got Hanalei Poi, which is always hard to get. You pay for it, but hard to find. Staff, and management always friendly and helpful. Mahalo plenty guys! šŸ¤™āœŒ

2/12/22 Wish this store closed later. It's the only full service grocery store conveniently located in the area other than KTA and Island Gourmet. Not sure what the company is thinking closing at 7pm. Nice, friendly workers. Management needs to do a common sense check. Gave it a 3 hoping they would've extended hours. Guess not. 😐

3/20/22 They actually reduced their hours. I dunno. Bentos and the seafood department are the go-to's. 8a - 8p would be good but I'm guessing they don't trad reviews. Island Gourmet is a great alternative down the road and open longer. Still pulling fir thus store as employees are always helpful and courteous. Put them back to a 4, just hoping for the linger hours for us early birds and night owls.

5/10/22 New hours: 9am - 7pm daily. Still closes kind of early but the only deal in the area other than Island Gourmet,...

They underwent a renovation recently but expanded the charcuterie, bakery, meat, and beverage areas. It still is a small store though, patience is key. They are carrying more select items like organics and higher end items than the Waimea location but it is still the least expensive option in all the resort areas. Yup, the secret is the maikai card. It's just your phone #, earn the rewards certificates for every $250 you spend. They don't expire. Tip your housekeeper them, but don't just tip them this :D. Good bakery, fresh donuts (when you catch aunty). My advice, get the small stuff and ready mades here, get the big stuff at Costco. Alcohol snobs will find something to sip here or island gourmet (or costco).
