First off thank you Shane for the awesome advice! I've rented boats in So Cal and Florida marathon, and have experience boating and any intelligent person who has sea legs will have there best day in Kona with this adventure. Knowing how longitude and latitude works will make finding the sunken bouys easy to find, some are harder to find then others. My wife spotted marker 27 and 35, great snorkeling spots. Yes you have to dive down to loop up, so must be able to hold your breath for 30 seconds. We also got into a pod of spinner dolfins! Look for boats moving slowly in groups and they most likely are on a site seeing tour, body glove boat gave it away fir us, just cruise on in to the pod of spinners and start talking pics. They have snorkel gear and fishing gear you can use if you don't have your own. Shane picked out a rod and a trolling lure for us. On our way back we trolled and maybe 3/4 - 1 mile off of Nohea point, making S turns at 250- 300 feet going 9-13 knots, we hooked into A big 34# Ono! Beautiful beast of a fish. I know I have paid $130 plus for a half day of charter boat fishing and not caught anything. We did all this on a half day. Being your own captain is so rewarding. If you and your buddies want a great day of fishing this is the best way to go fish! If you want to go site seeing this is the best way to see everything from Kona to Captain Cooks. You must be an intelligent, healthy, and be some what ocean savvy to get the best time out of you day. My boat ran very well and you must know how to read depth finders and work GPS to find land marks. I recommend this to any one who is capable and understands what a great value it really is for what you do with your time. Be your...
Read moreWe rented a boat here on Friday May 7th, 2021 and it was great! We drove the boat ourselves (me and my fiance) and we drove down along the western island shore toward Captain cook area. It was a perfect day and the boat was really easygoing and handled the sea well. A covering over the steering wheel and cockpit area provided nice shade from the sun, while the bow had plenty of seating area to lay down on and tan. Steering was super easy and controlling the speed was no problem. the cockpit was fully equipped with GPS, sonar, radio, tachometer and depth readings, everything you need to know where youre going. The coolest part was that they gave us a book which had GPS coordinates of moorings that were anchored to the ocean floor, and we navigated to the coordinates then dove in and tied the boat up so we could swim in the ocean. we saw some dolphins as well. The owners were incredibly helpful in getting us set up and walking us through the boat. They walked us through everything about the boat as well as all the controls and cockpit dashboard. The book they give you which I mentioned above has all the safety information and instructions you need to feel confident in driving the boat on the ocean (the sea was super calm on the day we went) and tying up to a mooring. This boat rental was the most fun time we had during our honeymoon on big Island. I definitely recommend this for anyone or a group looking to spend an awesome day on the water. when we return to Big Island we will definitely be renting...
Read moreWe really wanted this outing to be as amazing as we were assured it would be, and it was not. Showed up and they had the wrong rental agreement filled out and would not honor the lesser price we were quoted. Whatever, I just wanted to get out on the water with my family for the day. Snorkel gear on board, fishing gear on board. All set. So excited!! Out we go and immediately things go awry. Gas tank shows empty. We call and are advised it is full, but broken. Okay fine. Depth meter kept going off and we had no idea why. We've never had that issue before and was not pointed out before we set off. We were not made aware of the small craft advisory but immediately knew the conditions could be an issue once out of the harbor. Snorkeling was certainly out and we couldn't find any place calm enough to secure the boat. Two hours into our full-day outing and we called to come back in as we were getting sea sick (which has also never been an issue in the past) and it felt unsafe. We were allowed to return, and refunded $80. We asked about the 3-hour minimum for $300 and the water conditions, but were told they didn't have to honor a refund at all - so too bad. I understand everyone needs to make money, but if the conditions are poor, you should do what you can to accommodate and make it right. Why not have us reschedule? I don't understand and advise strong caution when booking unless you know that your conditions are good. Otherwise you will be out of luck and a...
