A few things for others to note that weren’t previously listed in reviews- You used to be able to take other vehicles as of August 2023 all vehicles must be 4x4 due to some vehicles not being able to make it down. I specifically overheard an employee tell someone AWD is hit or miss after telling me it must be 4x4. Another important detail the last car they sent up to the summit from the visitors center is 30 min before sunset then the road remains closed. If you are this last vehicle you will only be on the summit for 10 min as it takes 30 min to climb, they start sending cars down immediately due to the difficult terrain on the way down. This means you need to be headed up 40 min + you also have to acclimate to the altitude at the visitors center (9,000ft) for 30 min. This means you need to be at the visitors center 70+ min before sunset. Time it right so you enjoy! There are no telescopes for the public at the summit nor at the visitors center which previous reviews stated they waited in a long line for. These have been removed due to overcrowding. With all that to say this a must...
Read moreOur self-drive adventure to Mauna Kea Observatory was a highlight of my trip to Hawaii. The drive up the winding mountain road was an adventure in itself. As I climbed higher, the landscape transformed from lush rainforests to barren volcanic terrain. The air grew thinner, and the temperature dropped, but the breathtaking views made it all worthwhile. Upon reaching the summit, I was greeted by a vast, alien landscape. The observatory complex stood out against the stark, volcanic terrain. The clear, dark sky offered a stunning view of the Milky Way and countless stars. I felt a sense of awe and wonder as I gazed up at the universe. Mauna Kea is not only a scientific marvel but also a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. The mountain is believed to be the home of the gods and a place of great spiritual significance. It's important to approach Mauna Kea with respect and reverence. If you're planning a trip to Hawaii, I highly recommend visiting Mauna Kea Observatory. It's a truly unforgettable experience that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, scientific discovery, and cultural...
Read moreWe were driving up towards the summit of Mauna Kea when our car tire went flat, and we completely panicked. We were on our way to see the sunrise, so the visitor center wasn’t open yet, and it was still very dark because the sun hadn’t come up. We were so worried that we even considered calling 911. At that moment, Greg, who works at the observatory, and his assistant came to help us. He found the equipment needed to change the spare tire and willingly did the hard work for us. I apologized for getting dust all over his clothes, but Greg just laughed and said getting dust on his clothes wasn’t a big deal at all. As foreigners in this vast land, what we encountered was overwhelming hospitality. Oh, and my husband and I came to the Big Island for our honeymoon. When I said that this experience made our honeymoon feel like a nightmare, Greg told us it wasn’t a nightmare, but just an adventurous experience. We sincerely thank Greg and his assistant. We wish you both good health always. — A newlywed...
