This is definitely a must see and a must DO on Big Island. Do it yourself in a rented jeep, do NOT pay any heed to the doom mongers and worriers. If you like and enjoy driving, you will love it, it isn’t difficult and it isn’t challenging. It is just fun. Driving around Madeira or Gran Canaria is more challenging and dangerous. I’m absolutely certain I could do this in my Hyundai iLoad or my wife’s Tesla 3. Put your Jeep in H4 (Rangers advice, and spot on) to go up the unpaved part, and L4 for most of the descent. tap the gearlever to the left to put it in manual, and just use 2 to 5 all the way down. They do check the temperature of your brakes when you get down. Scenery and views are spectacular, and just find somewhere to stop after the car park when it is fully dark. Probably the best night sky I have ever seen.

The top of mauna kea is amazing and well worth the drive. You can drive a car to the visitors center, which is closed currently fire to covid, but the truly amazing experience is going to the summit. There is a ranger/guard at the visitors center who checks for four wheel drive and notes the number of people in your vehicle. The road is steep and windy with a lot of washboarding. It's not bad if you go slow. Above about 12,000 feet the road switches to paved again for the last climb. Use a very low gear on the way down and go slow and you'll do fine. Plan about an hour, round trip, from the visitors center to the top and back.

Tremendous experience which stands alone in Hawaii....standing in 3° late afternoon sun on the planets highest base-to-summit mountain is a true thrill. Thin air, few people, amazing views. I've climbed a lot of mountains....this one was fun to drive up to.

Polina: How is speculative design part of your project? Carmen: In everyday life everybody uses technology, but if we think about the future we will reach this moment where our technology doesn’t work anymore and all this important data will be lost. We see data as something special and valuable. Not only on a personal level but also nation- and worldwide. But technology is evolving so fast, that we can’t keep our data preserved. So as a speculative designer, I can research and think of alternative ways of preserving data. We can’t predict the future, so I can only make proposals about future orientated visions. To make us imagine a possible future. By starting solving the problem on a small scale we can think of a way to integrate...
