This is the best grocery store in the cities -- by far.
We moved from California. Grocery Outlet is a large chain in California that is similar to Mike's -- they're a discount opportunistic grocery that sells items close to expiration/are being discontinued.
When we moved back to Minnesota, we were very sad to not have Grocery Outlet anymore. But then, we found Mike's.
Mike's is amazing. I'd argue it's even better than Grocery Outlet, and miles above any average grocery store in the cities.
The primary draw to Mike's is the pricing -- things are very cheap compared to other grocers. This is possible because they don't have a broad selection and stock items that are close to expiration or being discontinued. It's not uncommon to find things that didn't sell at other stores here.
The downside is that they rarely have consistent stock. However, if you have an open mind, you won't be disappointed. There are snacks, frozen items, household goods and even clothes that are very cheap.

I think how Mikes' operation works is they purchase discounted food items in bulk that would soon to expire or EXPIRED already and resell it. Sometimes you'll find cheap milk, chips, granola bars, lots of fruits and vegetables. Tucked away in a small part of this strip mall I was surprised I found it. But needed something to drink so I stopped by, it can be a little dirty inside overall it's fairly cramped to get a bunch of stuff on their shelves. But I like it, interesting to support the location they're in. Everyone could you a discount, I was shocked that working in retail before I understood that It'd be deserving of a fine if you sell certain items after they expired so I don't know how this happens. Just look before you buy! For fruits and vegetables i don't know how they sell but much of it is very nice. 5 star for the quantity of products, 4 stars for their store layout and lack of quality products and 1 start for the expired stuff. So little more...
Read moreFor the past 11 years, I have blogged about cheap recipes and ways to save money on food (IG: @cheaprecipeblog ) With food prices increasing all the time (thanks, inflation!), the number one piece of advice I give people who want to save money on food is to shop at discount grocery stores, like Mike’s. The deals are amazing here. On my latest trip I found healthy foods like a HUGE bag of organic romaine lettuce for 2/$1. And a pack of pineapple-teriyaki gluten free chicken meatballs for $1.99. This summer I bought a pack of 200 Cholula hot sauce packets for $2. My tip for shopping at Mike’s: go in with an open mind, because you may not find every single item on your grocery list - but you will find amazing deals...
