Wild Bear Safari — Local services in Hoonah

Luke was an awesome guide! We landed in Hoonah on a drizzly day and Luke was ready to take us around! The day before they had some awesome sightings so we were excited. Unfortunately, the night before it had down poured so all the normal streams and rivers were RUSHING which excluded quite a few places for us to look. Luke was great and took us around to all the best spots and even out to his favorite hike which was gorgeous! We didn't see any bears but saw lots of signs of bears, it's just the way nature is though! We did stay out past the 3 hours for almost 5 hours searching around. Luke had a lot of good stories and facts and we enjoyed the day a ton. We saw lots of deer and on our way back to the boat even saw a giant pod of whales bubble feeding. We loved the small size of the tour (much better than those over-packed cruise tours) and we were dropped back off at the port site with PLENTY of time to spare and shop around still. Even without seeing bears (which we tried hard) it was an awesome way to spend our day. Down to earth and just enjoying the beautiful scenery on the island. Please...

Did we find bears? Nope. Did we learn some stuff? Yep! Did we see plenty of bear sign? Yep! Would we do this again with Luke? Absolutely! It was fantastic to get out off of the beaten path and just take it all in. Luke did a great job of keeping us entertained and teaching us some stuff. We were there last week, May 15th, and we're hoping to get back up there in July or Aug and maybe see the bears during the salmon runs. Until then, remember the toilet paper Luke!! Thanks for the ride--- DeAnn UPDATE-- I was lucky enough to make it back to Hoonah the end of August and went out again with Luke. He found us bears!! He took us to 5 different spots, and in 4 of those areas we spotted bears. One spot a bear walked right up the road toward us before turning off and going down to the creek and giving us a show. Once again, Luke was a fantastic guide. He's full of information, patience and LOTS of stories. A day out exploring with Luke in BearForce 1 is highly recommended. We had booked a tour with another operator but couldn't find him at the given pickup spot. We were wandering around asking people if they knew of our tour operator. Everyone said they hadn't heard of them. We walked up to Luke. He said he didn't know of that tour operator but that he had two empty spots in his van and we were welcome to join him. We took him up on his offer. He was very entertaining! Full of great stories and a wealth of information about bears. He drove us to some beautiful locations including a Muskog site (look it up). Unfortunately, we didn't see any bears as it is very very early in the season. The salmon aren't running. From my conversations with other people who went out on bear tours that day; no one saw bears! So I don't hold that against Luke. He was still very very entertaining! He didn't even charge us. We gave him a good tip. Then worked it out with the tour operator who didn't show and they worked out a deal with Luke to pay him. I would definitely go out with Luke again,...
