If you find yourself in Hoonah, Alaska, make sure to stop at Oso Gordito — it’s truly a highlight of the island. From the moment we arrived, the owner was incredibly personable, welcoming, and full of local insight. Not only did he serve up some of the best tacos we’ve ever had, but he also took the time to share a wealth of knowledge about Hoonah, its culture, and its community. It was nice to be able to talk to a local and learn first hand about the area.

About the food: I had the halibut tacos, and they were pretty amazing. My husband had their brisket tacos which he scarfed down before I got a chance to take a picture. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside, layered on soft corn tortillas with fresh lettuce, pickled jalapeños, cilantro, and a creamy cilantro sauce that tied it all together beautifully.

The setting is cozy and casual — even on a rainy day, it had a charm that made it feel like the perfect spot to relax and take in the local flavor.

Great food, great vibes, and a genuinely amazing...

What an unexpected surprise in an out of the way remote location. Possibly the best Halibut taco I have ever had. Texas folks working the tourist trade in Hoonah, Alaska. The tortillas was soft and flavorful. The Halibut was breaded just right to be crispy and enhance the taco without being too much. The Halibut was fresh, meaty and delicious. The slaw was just tart enough to enhance without taking over and the sweet pickled onions were a great touch. But don't miss the mesquite fries which were a star all by themselves. All in all, I wish I had more frequent access to...

We walked to Oso Gordito during a stop on our Alaska cruise, and it ended up being the best food we had on the entire trip—even better than what we had in Seattle. Like most food in Alaska, it’s on the pricier side, but the quality absolutely justifies it. The fish tacos were perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and the churros—which are often a letdown at other places—totally exceeded my expectations. Crispy, warm, and just the right amount of sweetness. Highly recommend if you're in town and want something...

This food truck slaps! The music, menu and food all tell a story of delicious eats infused with Texan culture. We LOVED the hand-cut fries smothered with cheese & chorizo, the massive beef burrito and flavorful halibut taco. We appreciated other details like Starlink wifi, cornhole, paper/compostable serve ware, cool merch, covered seating and specialty hot sauces. For a food truck, this feels like a proper restaurant operation. Highly recommend!

When in Hoonah, AK what does a Texan do? Order a Halibut Taco from a Texas food truck!! The ordering is done via computer which was a bit confusing and did not allow to ask questions or for recommendations. I wanted my taco without sauce and thought I ordered it that way but it came with sauce on it. It still was tasty but I’m not a mayo fan and think I would have enjoyed it more without.
