I live in the Hermiston area, and was coming to John Day to celebrate my moms 75th birthday. I didnt want to travel with a cake so I called chesters to order her cake! The lady i called and talked to,we discussed a half sheet cake.I wanted pink roses, she suggested that we could do pastel roses on the cake! Sounded great,so I placed my order! Went to pick the cake up Saturday. Not one pink rose on the cake, actually there were no roses on the cake at all! I was not happy at all,but at this point i had no other options,so i had to take the cake! We to the register to pay and the cake was $80!! $80 for a cake that looked like a 3rd grader threw together! If i would have had any other options i most defintly would not have purchased this cake! What a dissapointment!! I think if you are going to charge $80 for a cake it should at least be what I asked for! Maybe your decorator needs some training! I would never reccomend this place for a celebration cake! Edit: The cake was absolutely horrible, dry like it was frozen for way to long! The frosting was dry and slightly crunchy! Should be ashamed to sell this garbage for $80!!...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLived here for six months, some staff are friendly while others are extremely rude. Organic selection is not the greatest and prices are ridiculous. Charging full price for rotten produce, and I mean eggplant you touch and it oozes out black stuff, moldy cauliflower, slimy old spinach and much more. You hear the people in the deli talk about how bad the flies are. Bought plenty of frozen food that was either super freezer burned or made you super sick. Staff are only nice to the people they choose to be and since they are the only grocery store they know they can get away with it. I'd rather shop at Piggly Wiggly or Save A lot, I'd get the same quality but I wouldn't be robbed for it. If you eat organic, or are vegetarian or need healthier foods, its cheaper to drive the 150 miles to a good store than what you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGrocery stores in small towns tend to be the heart of their communities (Chester's is no exception). I am pleased to report that the Red Bull in John Day is Just as chilled and affordable as it is in Salem - and after not sleeping in my own bed, I was very grateful to find someone available to sell it to me!
Edited: Stayed another night in John Day this week and realized Chester's also has a variety store connected to it. I bumped to five stars because I'm no longer making an unfair mental comparison to a more urban shopping center. This retailer is heavily invested in being all things to all people who visit (locals AND nomads). I earlier said Chester's is the heart of this community but way understated their importance. They...
