Mac's Cashsaver — Local services in Magnolia

This was my first visit to Mac's. My dad and I went in search of good deals on big cuts of pork for making homemade bacon on the smoker while we were in magnolia. The meat department in the store is better than most grocery stores I have been to, and they definitely have some good deals on meat. The only other thing I wanted was zatarains parboiled rice. This store doesnt carry parboiled rice. Most grocery stores up here don't. They should. You folks are missing out on some really great rice.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the pricing gimmick that Mac's uses. They claim to mark everything in the store at their cost, and add 10% to their cost (after all expenses) at the register. Based on the pricing I tend to believe that claim. Why not just add the 10% at the label? Because it's a gimmick. But even still they do have some very good pricing on meats and name brand groceries.

I will likely always hate gimmicks designed to confuse or trick people into a products true out-the door cost. It is a deceptive tactic that leverages basic human psychology to get people to spend more money in the store than they otherwise would have. "This is only $9.95? What a great deal!" Except it's another 10% at the register so now it's $11.00, plus another xx% sales tax so it's really closer to $12.00. But it's labelled at $9.95. Here's a suggestion on a more ethical gimmick: just mark it up with the stores 10% included, and include sales tax in the advertised pricing too. That's another 5-10% or so seen at the register. Bam! Out the door pricing on everything while you're shopping! What a novel concept. And it's still a gimmick but at least it's a much, much less shady one.

Enough of my nitpicking and soap boxing. I like this store even with their detestable gimmick and will go back. You should try it out too. Just remember to add 15-20% to the advertised price when you're selecting items in the store because that is what it is going to cost you at the register. They aren't fooling me with that mess so don't let the actual cost...

They now have a app u can download that's pretty cool. Let's u see the lunch menu & specials they have but at times it won't have certain ones on the app at the store. The app has scratch offs every 2 weeks that allow u to win a free item that the app shows. The lunch place they do have some workers that aren't that friendly. They have different verities of lunch choices there. The chicken is the popular one. They do take orders over the phone so if u don't want to wait in line u can call it in. The line gets long around 12 during lunch hrs and at times they tend to have phone orders that's ordering a lot of chicken so they grab the cook ones in the front even if theres people waiting inline for the chicken. They should fry more for the phone orders that ordering a bunch of chicken and let the ones in the front go to people waiting in line. But that's my opinion. I still love that store. They do have reasonable prices there that I like. Wish they had more veggies & fruits to choose from. The cashiers are friendly and nice as well as the manager. He's really sweet. They do take Bill's (light bill that I know of) make copies, money orders, and fax. But that part don't open till 9am. Would like...

I saw they was having a sale if you bought 5 boxes of cereal it was 1.79 a box so of course I had to get 5 since it was that cheap. I got 5 kinds that they had over there and I kept thinking that my bill was higher than it should have been. I usually pay attention but I was already irritated because the woman checking took forever to come to the register then she wanted to discuss everything that I got. Anyway when I looked at receipt I was charged all different prices ranging from 3.49 and down to 2.29 not one rang up 1.79. When i had went back it took 2 different women to discuss what the issue was then the lady that did my refund it took her 15 minutes to get it correct and i had to run my card 4 times before it went through and they had to refund me $9.38. So good thing I did look at my reciept I work hard for my money and ten dollars does not seem like alot but for me it really is I need every dime I can get so pay attention at any store when...
