The facility is great, especially the kids area and top-rope/lead area. I was a little disappointed by the bouldering area though, but I think it has a lot of room to grow. The pads were extremely firm, so much so that I was nervous to commit to any reachy lateral movements or high crux moves. You would not want to take a fall that isn't feet first in that gym, which isn't always a guarantee with bouldering. Another complaint was that there's almost zero variation in finishing height. Almost every problem finishes at the top of the wall (not over the edge of the wall, but an actual hold at the top), which is verging on high-ball territory for a lot of climbers like myself (which also increases the odds of a bad fall onto hard pads). This makes it pretty unwelcoming to newer climbers, or experienced climbers (like myself) worried they'd get hurt hitting the deck from 14 feet. I also watched a party of first timers lose interest pretty quickly and retreat to the kids area because the color/rating system wasn't well marked (only one legend on a pole outside the bouldering area) and the problems are all so high, which is scary to someone who hasn't climbed before.
To improve the bouldering, I think the route setters need to add some more variety (including height), especially for beginners. I also think the gym should provide some additional crash pads for climbers to use to protect dangerous parts of problems until the current pads break in/soften up, especially in the overhanging areas. Also, the colored cards that designate a problem's difficulty have enough blank space to add the rating range, like V2-V3. It took me probably an hour until I'd finally memorized the color/rating legend, and was quite frustrated having to walk out of the crag just to look up the difficulty a color...
Read moreMy daughter's 7th birthday party was at High Point Climbing in Memphis. The kids had a fabulous time, the party room was perfect, and it was an overall superb experience. Our group was assigned a guide to equip kids with climbing gear and provide rules/ instruction. He was so helpful with everything from helping kids in and out of gear, assisting with hooking/ unhooking ropes for climbing, ensuring the safety of our guests, carrying items up to the party room, answering any questions that arose, and helping me keep up with time. The party room had 2 refrigerators, ice machines, plenty of tables and chairs, and lots of light for a happy party. Furthermore, everything was clean and ready to go when we arrived. Pricing was also very reasonable, and all of the staff were very patient and helpful with our group of children. I highly recommend this location for parties and general play or exercise for kids. Everyone there had...
Read moreMy daughter enjoyed her 13th birthday party held there:)The party was 2 and 1/2 hour for 270ish $. We had both rooms until 1pm, but was quickly moved to the back room, with a partition because they had booked a party after ours but failed to let us know so we could wrap up on time. Our Party host was unaware that there was another party and had told us we were good. I suggest that they make sure everyone knows the party schedule so no guest feels rushed to get moving or delayed with their start of their party. My daughter had a wonderful time with her friends, and it was reasonably priced, we were able to bring outside foods, and they have a ice machine, sink, and refrigerator in both party rooms. There isn't a microwave or stove in the party rooms. They are very accommodating with how you decorate the party rooms. Over all I would recommend Highpoint Climbing as a good place to have a kid's...
