I went to his shop and paid $150 for a diagnosis, including a $100 rush fee. His conclusion? The power supply was faulty, and either the CPU or motherboard was also broken — but he couldn’t say for sure. His suggestion? Replace everything.
I’m not a technician or anything, so maybe that kind of uncertainty is normal… but it felt like a lot to pay for a “maybe.”
The next day, I went to a different shop. They tested the system, confirmed it was just the power supply, They only charged me $90 for labor, and the machine is running perfectly now. Everything's working perfectly now. Invoice available if anyone’s curious.
Just wanted to share my experience — maybe it'll be helpful to someone else.
Updated Just wanted to add a few things after hearing back from the owner — he was very quick to call me after my review, which I appreciate!
He explained that the $150 I paid was actually only the rush fee, and that diagnostic was included in that. I might have misunderstood, since the invoice I got says:
"Rush upgrade $100 additional accept"
So I assumed the $100 was the rush fee and the $50 was for the diagnosis, but apparently it’s all one thing. I guess the wording on the invoice just wasn’t updated or something...?
Also, he is right, he never told me to replace everything, in the diagnostic note he gave me, suggested that I might want to replace the power supply,...
Read moreMy PC randomly started having a USB current issue. 100$ diagnostic fee (which gets applied to your final bill) and hentold me my mobo was shot. He told me it seemed to be others reporting the same issue with my motherboard and gave me a few options. Even before paying him he tried to solve my issue over the phone... he gave me package deals just to get the job done, slight upgrade or take my rig to a more "modern" level in terms of giving her a fee more years of high end gaming before she starts being obsolete.
Man was even willing to work payment plans. I sent my cousin over with an issue a week after my issue and he solved it as well. Good guys, good service, will def be using him for future builds and...
Read moreI've been doing business with Gary since he started out in a two bedroom apartment, about 15 years ago or more. (Windows 95 time) Over the years, I have purchased numerous machines for me, my family members, my business, and as gifts. I purchased both laptops and desktops. Throughout my dealings with GEM, I had one system with a mother board failure which took out the hard drive. This happened under manufacture warranty. Gary picked up the machine, diagnosed it repaired it, and salvaged my files for free. I had to organize my information, but haven't found anything missing. GEM is my place for my computer needs and have highly recommended them in the past and will continue to do so...
