Overall this is an awful place both for education and employment. Wise not to waste your time and money here.
Morehead has significant drawbacks as a work/living place. The campus buildings including furniture and classrooms are very old, urgently needing remodeling and deep cleaning. MSU campus lacks diversity. Managment is very weak. You will neither be respected nor welcomed properly. New engineering or science faculty earn an average salary of ~$68K/year, while health insurance costs are high ($350/month for a family standard PPO plan). In addition, they have city, county, and state taxes on income. They do not provide graduate tuition waiver for the spouse of the employee as well as on and off campus job opportunities are scarce. Finding housing in Morehead is a nightmare, with no phone network coverage in many areas. The small and rural setting limits access to diverse restaurants, kosher/halal meat, temples, mosques, and major airports, requiring long travel every week or during holidays. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are unavailable. Seasonal bug issues and isolation further add to the challenges. There are no good parks or playgrounds for kids in this city. The standard of living is very low. Consider these factors carefully before...
Read moreAbsolutely horrendous. I originally rated the school at 3 stars while I was attending but now that it's over they deserve as few stars as possible.
The pros: great Art, Philosophy, and Engineering Technology programs.
The cons: pretty much everything else.
Parking is a joke. After gouging you on price for a sticker they intentionally oversell (e.g. 130 stickers for 100 spots) they often ticket and/or tow regardless of whether you've got the sticker displayed. Food services is equally asinine. The staff and workers are all friendly and mostly competent but the selection and hours of availability are poor at best and any meal or plan is horrendously overpriced.
The computer science department (both professors) recently quit and were replaced with whatever they could find in the bargain bin.
The math department, while surprisingly helpful and personable, is woefully underfunded.
Maybe the new president will fix things but my time (and a sizable amount of money) has already...
Read moreI would strongly advise going somewhere else honestly, the amount that you’re paying to be here just to revive so little in return is actually insane. The housing situation is even worse, as someone with accommodations to be in a single room I do not know why I came in to two sets on furniture, I can’t even move around in my dorm let alone bring my ESA or any of my items… I called housing and asked them if they could remove it since an RA told me they could and got met with someone being rude over it, I told them if they aren’t gonna move it then they need to move me, I guess Cartmel is used as a “summer camp” as well and ALL rooms have two sets of furniture, when I was living here last semester they no didn’t… why lie to get out of doing something??? And why am I paying so much money to be here just for this to happen, it’s ridiculous, honestly the classes are good but the housing situation is disgusting and needs work baddd, don’t waste your time...
