Planning and Design My kitchen remodel was a long time in the works. We bought our house in 2000 and immediately had to do some projects to protect the structure of the house so the more “fun” kitchen remodel went to the back burner. We were hoping to save some of the original cabinetry so over the years we talked to different contractors and cabinet makers. Everyone had good ideas but it wasn’t until I met with John that I felt like we could make our vision happen. A little more than a year later we have achieved our goal of preserving the original character of the kitchen while modernizing everything and making it a very charming and efficient place to prepare meals. It was the collaboration with John that made it happen. The final product was a combination of our ideas and John’s design expertise and craftsmanship.
Construction We used trades recommended by John for plumbing, electric and demo. Tamarack Renovations who did the demo and framing was outstanding and so was Milestone Plumbing. Overall the project went smoothly. John is very particular about who he works with – he sets a high standard and the work performed lived up to it. The cabinets that John constructed for us are beautiful and functional and compliment the house style John was completely attuned to the look we were trying for in the kitchen. For example, we worked together on keeping the big cast iron radiator under the sink – John built a cabinet that surrounds it while I found the register cover that he built in to it. Keeping some of the old created design challenges but John was very adept at saving the existing and creating great modern solutions for the new.
Cost We chose custom flush inset cabinetry which is a high end cabinet to compliment the existing cabinets. The cabinetry was not inexpensive but I did comparison with other cabinet makers and semi-custom cabinet lines. I feel that I absolutely got my money’s worth and that John’s price was competitive with other contractors. The best decision I made on this project was choosing John, The Cabinetmaker. We are thrilled with our new (and...

Our history with John dates back to 2013 when he designed, built, and installed cabinetry for our business. Several years later he built a lovely entertainment console for our home. I was impressed with the pride he took in his work, attention to detail, and the ease in doing business with him. So, when we finally decided to renovate our kitchen and bathrooms, John was our obvious choice for the design of our cabinetry and new kitchen.
Our 100 + year old home had a small kitchen that became crowded whenever a third person entered the room. John was able to re-design the lay-out of our kitchen to maximize the cabinet /storage area while opening the space to comfortably work in and even entertain guests. Because we were making other renovations John was able to put us in contact with a terrific contractor, Matt Hafemeister of Tamarack Renovations, LLC.
John led us through the kitchen design process, helping us choose the style and color of the cabinetry and hardware. He had several great ideas for built in features that would make the space easier to work in and move around. He connected us with a countertop fabricator, tiler, and appliance dealer. He worked with each of these contractors to ensure that the dimensions and styles would work well in our new space.
Throughout our project John was available to answer our questions and offer his seasoned advice when we weren’t sure what to do. He was in contact with our contractor to make sure that the installation of the finished product was delivered on time to fit into the tight schedule of this project. The staff who installed the cabinetry were friendly, professional, and respectful of our home.
We couldn’t be happier with the finished products in our kitchen and bathrooms. I highly recommend The Cabinet Maker for his design and building expertise, attention to detail and the way in which he was able to take a lot of the stress out of making important decisions that we will be living with for years to come. ...
Read moreWe did a full kitchen remodel with John during the summer of 2021 and I would enthusiastically recommend his team and service to anyone. In our experience, John was exceptionally organized, responsive, detailed, and thoughtful. Every part of the process was well documented and discussed. We wanted to make some fairly significant changes to our kitchen layout including expanding an opening, incorporating new space in to the kitchen, and changing a window. While we understood practically what we wanted, John brought his experience of function and design to make a space that worked the best it could and was esthetically beautiful. Because we were working with a custom cabinet maker, we were able to create solutions that we really wanted like dual appliance garages to hide our frequently used small appliances. Our timeline was flexible, so we did wait a few weeks to get started on the demolition, but that ended up being a blessing. John was able to order and build our pieces while we waited to start work at home. It was exciting to get an occasional email update with photos of the work in progress. The timeline provided was detailed with reasonable amounts of buffer for issues or overlap. Through the course of the project we stayed pretty darn close to that outline, sometimes a bit faster sometimes a day or two slower. John did a great job managing expectations for costs and timeline. By in large everything ran rather smoothly. The few things that were a bit difficult (like appliance delivery during a pandemic) were far outside his control. We had John run our entire project for us including selecting all the service providers. John's high standards and expectations are reflected in the quality of individuals he partnered with as well. We were working from home during the whole process and every person in was professional and the quality of work impressive. We love everything about our new kitchen. It is beyond what we...
