I've been shopping here for more than a decade and I've never seen any bad behavior by staff OR customers, as some of the other reviewers report. The people -- cashiers, deli counter, shelf-stockers -- are always friendly, pleasant, and helpful. And the cashiers are super-efficient and most of them are bilingual. The store is open 7:00am to 9:00pm every day; it's clean, brightly lit, and decorated with historic photos of the neighborhood. It's quite small compared to its only competitor (Fine Fare on Gun Hill Road) so does not have as wide a selection but it's much more homey and inviting. I'd give it five stars except that in May 2018 they ripped out three(?) cash registers and put self-checkouts, which are inappropriate for the majority of the customers. And also because the deli meats -- at least the chicken and turkey -- are mushy composites rather than natural. It would be a big plus if they offered fresh non-"processed" turkey and chicken meat.
Update: In August 2023 Foodtown acquired the adjoining space, formerly American Savings Bank, so now it's twice as big, and they added at least one new...
Read moreIt's a perfectly serviceable grocery store. Their prices are either great or exorbitant, with no in-between.
For example: their produce prices are pretty fair. The cost of dairy products is not.
Sometimes they have great sales, like 10 for $10 yogurts—or 2 for $5 (or even $4) 8 oz. cheese blocks.
Their eggs are sometimes affordable, due to sales, but usually not.
Butter is never a good price. You can't get a pound of butter for less than $5.
Their deli is the most expensive of the three counters I've attended in the area, and I've refused to buy from them for that reason. They want $10 or more for a pound of turkey. This isn't Manhattan.
They had a great sale on hummus one day (2 for $5) but, normally, an individual container of hummus is $5, and it's a terrible deal.
You get the idea. It's good for some things, bad for others. Be discerning, and shop around at other stores in the area for better deals on...
Read moreWorst supermarket I have ever shopped at. I can point out maybe one or two workers who were actually standing there with a friendly face wanting to do there job, the rest should find new jobs or start working on their Careers! Not only are the prices super high the manager including some workers just seem out of wack. I've had plenty of jobs with a manager position and still did not abuse that power this man just does not care some people really just work for a paycheck and customer service is everything if you don't have that go work at a warehouse where you dont have to deal with customers or face to face interactions. His mouth is super foul I've been going here for years but I personally had enough they not even worth the hassle. Just throw the whole...
