Mount Carmel Cemetery — Local services in New York

Ten to twelve of my relatives have been laid to rest in this cemetery. Since I was a young child, I remember my family constantly having issues with gravesite maintenance and all sorts of things. We’ve always paid top dollar and did our best to contribute.

Until my mother passed away, it wasn’t something that I needed to worry about personally. A family friend that visits this cemetery brought to my attention that my mother's grave was damaged, the monument was knocked over, and the foundation was destroyed, and this is not the first incident. The few times that I was able to visit due to active duty military service, there seemed to be minimal issues aside from burials practically overlapping one another and maybe the uneven setting of the plants.

My mother’s brother contacted Mount Carmel cemetery only to be told that we must cover the cost of contracting a monument setter and are personally responsible for removing, storing, and resetting the monument. Although the damage was the fault of the facility and its contractors, the foundation that they damaged will be repaired, BUT how exactly is the family of the deceased responsible for repairing/resetting/whatever?? Unfortunately, most of the family is out of state, so this matter is not a simple one with a simple resolution. I hope with all the might I possess that this dilemma is rectified with haste. The heartache Mount Carmel shares with those who trust to bury their families here are unacceptable.

A Florida man has brought a $5 million negligence lawsuit against a Queens chapel and cemetery, claiming they botched his father’s burial by dropping the coffin and causing the corpse to fall out as family members looked on.

Yakov Sherman of Naples is suing the Mount Carmel Cemetery Association and Parkside Memorial Chapels after they allegedly ruined the Nov. 13 burial of his father, Aron Sherman.

“While lowering the coffin into the grave, the defendant’s employees dropped the coffin,” which caused the lid to fall off and “the body of Aron Sherman was ejected from the coffin,” the Brooklyn federal lawsuit alleges.

The body “fell into the dirt of the burial hole” in plain view of relatives, court papers claim. The family was then pushed back while the workers “retrieved” the remains.

A rep with the cemetery declined to comment, while a manager at Parkside Memorial passed the buck, saying, “The cemetery workers who were responsible for handling the casket at the graveside dropped it.”

This cemetary is beautiful and the old part is spacious. However they don't actually care for it - we paid for lawn that was never planted. They are not the most empathic either. Was told gate closes sharply at 345 and they won't let anyone in after. Wanted to bring my wedding bouquet to my dad's grave but was stuck in traffic and running only 15 min behind. Too bad.
