Lovely and well used park with 3 very different components: 1) Outskirts of reservoir is good for strolling, running, biking and viewing and inner trails between reservoirs is pleasant when open. I liked this area of the park better when I moved into the neighborhood 25 years ago and it was all dirt paths, never a barrier to the inner trails, lots of breaks in the former chain link fences which allowed exploring in the wooded former reservoirs, and nothing but a difficult climb to prevent going up the east side to the top of the next-door cemetery with the best panoramic view of Manhattan. But since paths were paved and a nice looking iron fence installed along with nice lampposts, this area of the park is used by far more people than previously. 2) Still in the upper portion of the park but across the street is the area with the inadequate (always fills early) parking lot, many picnicking areas with grills, a pleasant ravine with a stone bridge going over it, a volleyball area always in use by South Americans (festive atmosphere), some baseball fields and meadows, a playground/basketball courts, and two sets of restrooms. My main complaint here is the clearing of all the undergrowth in the ravine several years ago - it's easier to walk around now but at the expense of sense of isolation and exploration. 3) Lower Highland Park is the busiest part and the most accessible; it's mostly dedicated to sports recreation with baseball/softball fields, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball courts, handball courts, an astroturfed soccer pitch, an oval sloped grassy area, a flatter grassy area, a playground for little kids, a playground for bigger kids, restrooms, and a fenced off community garden. Main complaints: restrooms are closed way too early when there's still hours of daylight left in the day, not enough benches outside the playground areas, no enforcement against motorbikes - their noise is disturbing of the park atmosphere but more importantly, some speed through areas were kids are...
ย ย ย Read moreHighland park holds a special place in my heart. I have been going there with my grandparents since I was a little girl and then into my teenage years. I returned for the first time after losing my grandfather. This time I showed up with my two little ones. I was really happy to see the upkeep of the park has upgraded.
They have paved walking paths in the park. However the parking lot is too small and gets filled quickly. At this moment it seems they are doing mire renovations in the park. So the park has been split in half because of construction gates. So it is very frustrating to try and get in from one side to the other. My biggest complaint is that there are no entrances from the parking lot that allow you to bring your carriage and troll in from the parking lot into the park. I had to lift my carriage baby in it and all yo get over a little barrier they have. But over all it was nice to he there again. It's really still just as beautiful as it...
ย ย ย Read moreWe had a great time on the new Disc Golf course. It is designed for quick play and PUTTERS. No need to bring the whole kit!
The course itself is great for beginners however there some pretty tricky trees to shoot through! (We got a disc stuck ina tree and took a good half hour to rescue it!)
The DG Course could use some More signage to help non DG people understand that the there may be discs flying from far away, there was a picnic happening ON one of the starter spots for hole 3.
There is some construction happening around the park for upgraded pathways so your disc may have you venturing into some netted off areas And obviously these will go away as the pathways are finished
Overall we had a great time.
4 of us took about 45 mins to complete the 9 holes, we would have done the +1 but it was in our opinion reverse what it should be and would have had us backtracking unnecessarily.
We will be back when in town to play this fast simple PUTTER...
