My beautiful cat, Hades kept straining and could not urinate. The emergency vet near me could not get him in so I took him to Newberry at 5pm Wednesday evening. They informed me that he had a urinary blockage and would need treatment. I agreed to the astronomical bill with high hopes of recovery. The dr assured me that I caught this early and he had a high percentage rate of making it. He received IVs, meds and a catheter to clear the blockage. Once the catheter was removed and he was able to urinate on his own he could come home. I picked him up Thursday evening after 5pm. I was given pain meds to administer, special cat food and told to call immediately if he was unable to urinate. My poor fur baby was unable to pee. I called Newberry at 12pm Friday afternoon in tears. If he was blocked again I would not be able to afford anymore treatment. I asked if they would be able to euthanize him so he was not suffering. They asked me to come in to check him out. We got there around 3pm Friday and they said he was not blocked, they were able to express his bladder. They said the muscles and his bladder were weak and he needed time to heal. My question was, “how did he urinate by himself for you to send him home but not at all once he got home?” The Dr gave me some non logical reasons… that maybe upon removal of the catheter urine was leaking. You would be able to tell if a cat can truly pee on his own right? I was then sent home again with more meds and instructed to bring him back if he did not pee. Friday night at 10pm my fur baby had not peed. He was crying, he had not eaten in over 24hrs, he was bleeding and he was now vomiting. I called Newberry AGAIN in tears over this. They told me this is normal and to seclude him in a room and call in the morning. I’m no animal Dr but NOTHING about this situation was normal. What was putting him alone in a room going to do? I would NOT leave his side and ignore this. Hades was severely suffering and in a great deal of pain. At 3am Saturday morning my son called another vet due to hades crying and screaming in pain like we’ve never heard before along with continuing to vomit. After his exam the Dr came in to tell us that Hades bladder was extremely full and irritated. It also felt abnormal in its shape indicating infection. She also said his kidneys were enlarged and irritated, they were shutting down. My poor baby was in kidney failure due to being blocked up. She recommended we say goodbye. We had to make the choice to let Hades cross the rainbow bridge.
How did Newberry not know what was happening to him! How could they send this sweet baby home to suffer and then continue to disregard my concerns and blow us off. They made this entire experience traumatic for my Hades and for myself. My heart is broken to have let him have that horrific experience. There is a lack of medical knowledge, compassion and service. I beg you to consider another vet in the event of an emergency.
You would think after ALL of that they would have called to check on Hades… they did not. What a pathetic place of business.
Rest easy my...
Read moreI took my Chihuahua here due to my cat scratching literally his eyeball... I called to see what I can do at home and maybe wait to be seen by my actual vet. They told me with eye injuries it could be hit or miss and it could get worse and he could loose his vision. I was already worried as my other dog I had who had to be put to sleep actually bursted his eyeball somehow. The lady over the phone told me that it was 150 to be seen and then they would do a tx plan and fees discussed before any tx is done. When we got there, we were informed that the wait could be a little bit due to certain emergencies taking priority which we understood but the way the lady made it sound like was not too professional. She asked questions pertaining to my dog and such and asked if he was neutered, I told her no and she made it seem like I was going to hell for not having him neutered. She explained all the issues with not neutering which I understand but the way and tone she explained in my opinion was not very professional and made me feel bad as a dog owner. My dog is 7 and she was like that's a little too old to not be neutered at this point.
When we finally got a room, the one tech was super nice. I didn't catch her name but I really liked her. She genuinely cares and explained very well. The Dr was in and out and she was just all over the place. Again, I do know that it is an Er but an emergency is an emergency at the end of the day. They took my dog back and did a eye drop test to see if he had a scratch on his cornea and he did have a very small one. Now I will say there were super nice and I appreciate them clipping his nails free of charge because that is such a struggle for us to do. I was not informed how much the eye drop test would be or anything they planned to do really which I wish I was informed first. They gave us pain medicine and eye drops for him to take for a few days and altogether it was $262 just for a little tiny scratch that may have been able to wait till the next day but I felt like they kinda scared me into bringing him in. I do appreciate the fact that we were seen and thankful it wasn't more, I just feel like the whole visit could have been a little more professional. I don't know if I will use this office again, I will have to evaluate the circumstances before I do because the queen street one has been better for me in my opinion, I chose this one to see how it worked and it's a bit closer to home. My recommendation is try requesting fees up front so there is no surprise at the end and you are stuck with a bill...
Read moreFirst of all, the people here saved my dog's life and for that I am so thankful. My puppy suffered a traumatic injury from a freak accident with a stick she was playing with in the yard. I am beyond grateful for the work they did and their ability to remove the stick from her abdomen where it had impaled her. I can't say enough thank yous for that.
I will say, the front desk staff could definitely use some help with their people skills. We called before we came, in panic due to the emergency situation, and let them know our puppy had been impaled with a stick, it had literally skewered her through her abdomen and out her back. When we arrived we rushed her inside only to be met with a very rude individual at the front desk demanding we put her down on the scale to weigh her. I explained (thinking maybe she wasn't aware that we were the people that called) that she had a stick through her abdomen and we literally could not risk putting her down and having her move, in fear that the stick would move and do more damage or hit any of her internal organs. This person continued with their rude attitude trying to tell me that they couldn't help us until we weighed her...thankfully someone else rushed up and took us to the back immediately. But that initial interaction left a bad taste in my mouth.
The clinic was able to work with us financially and I appreciated their help with that, but I will say that the prices are absolutely insane, we were initially told a price double what we ended up paying (and our bill was not cheap) my primary vet warned me that they can double and triple charged and his advice in handling that was very helpful. I understand just like an emergency room visit for people is more expensive than a doctor visit, so is an emergency animal hospital. But when our "discounted" price is still multiple thousands of dollars, there's definitely a bit of up charging happening.
All in all, our puppy is alive and I am so thankful for them for saving her, just wish some of the inner workings here were a bit...
