Castaways Park in name, though is actually a separate park in use from the main lot off of Dover and Castaways Lane at 18th Street. Waterfront access to Lower Newport Bay is available from here, as I found out the hard way by hiking down via a trail that parallels the sidewalk on the south side of Dover Street. I returned with a vehicle and kayak to the lower parking lot, where I was easily able to park and set off into the Bay! The water was brackish, tho surprisingly clear, if not somewhat tainted by the passing motorboats. Relatively speaking, the small park was one of the least crowded I’ve seen in the area, as the main Castaway’s Park and adjoining Bob Henry Park parking lots may be full to capacity. The upper and lower parks are the same, just parking preference. The memorial is located on either side. There is also a bike path that runs north along the bay 😀.
