I had a great and fun lesson with Kalani today. I am a beginner surfer used to catching smaller waves (2'-3'), but took a lesson to hammer down on the fundamentals and break any bad habits that may be forming. I first started learning on a shortboard (big mistake), before switching to a good ole wavestorm, and eventually worked my way down to an 8' longboard. I could catch green waves, though a bit inconsistently, and knew basic surfing fundamentals before taking this lesson. I felt that my surfing was progressing, albeit a bit slowly, so I took this opportunity to see if there were obvious mistakes I could correct.
Kalani quickly gauged my skill level and made constant adjustments throughout the lesson to make sure I was getting the most out of the session. Once he felt I understood a topic, he would teach me something new and constantly push me out of my comfort zone and into the learning zone. He was attentive and gave tips on how to read the waves, position yourself optimally, and surf safely. He was also very observant and pointed out minor things that never even crossed my mind that significantly increased my chances of catching a wave. It helped me realize how paddling even a second later, or not paddling hard enough immediately could cause you to miss a wave. Of course, there were also about a half a dozen things specific to me that he pointed out that I will have to work though to become a better and more consistent surfer. Happy to say that I did catch multiple 5'-8' waves by the end of our 2 hour session, though it did come at the price of gulping some sea water. I can say that this was the most fun and exhilarating experience I've had surfing, especially because this was my first foray away from the more traditional beginner spots.
I would definitely recommend checking this business out even if you're not a true beginner. There's so much to learn and getting out there with a professional surfer like Kalani is such a humbling experience. I'm sure you...
Read morePhenomenal surfing experience. North Shore Beach Boyz provide the best surf lessons on the north shore. My surfing jumped a level using tips Coach Kalani gave me in the first 5 minutes of our first session. My three lessons with them resulted in the best surf sessions of my life-- absolutely transformational.
I used to live on the North Shore, am self-taught, and at an intermediate level. I've seen lots of people receive coaching and training, and what North Shore Beach Boyz offers far exceeds the others. They are fully committed to surfing in general, sharing wave knowledge, and letting you feel part of the Hawaiian North Shore Ohana-- distinguishing themselves from other North Shore surf instructors. Taught me about all aspects of surfing, giving me tips on things I had no idea I was doing wrong.
Here are some stories from my time with them:
Had lots of fun (see pic)
Out in the water, people complemented me on being lucky enough to work with Kalani. Actual quotes-- "he is a true waterman, that is the guy you want teaching you"; "he is teaching you right"; "you've come a long way since the first lesson".
He would catch the same wave as me, to observe my form on the wave as I rode it. Other surf instructors I observed might push you in to the wave or sit inside and watch you catch it, but nothing like this. The immediate feedback built my confidence.
Kalani has a magic ability call catchable waves. Where the pack would sit too long looking, he would set me off paddling and I constantly caught waves with him. The increased wave count repetitions gave me lots more opportunities to work on my form.
I'm planning to work with their team again when I return to the North Shore. Looking forward to having them teach my wife and kids; and planning to recommend them to my friends who want to learn to surf.
Thanks so much North Shore...
Read moreKalani and his surf lessons were the highlight of our trip. We feel so fortunate that we were introduced to him by North Shore Surf Shop.
First, he is the epitome of the Aloha spirit. Friendly, chill, welcoming, and humble.
Second, he is an epic surfer. As we walked down the beach with him one day we overheard someone say after we had just walked past them, “Do you know who that was? Kalani Chapman!” And then as my 10 year old said, “Dad, he’s even blue check verified on Instagram!” Pretty awesome to learn from such a well respected, pro surfer.
Third, my kids thrived with him. Both were riding the first waves they attempted and my 13-year-old son spent over 8 hours with Kalani over the week we were there. My 10 year old was a little more timid and one day Kalani even had a local high school kid, Jake, join us so my 10 year old could be as comfortable as possible.
Fourth, Kalani is really well respected in the North Shore area, which is great because when you are with him in the water as a beginner everyone around knows him and is super friendly and supportive of you learning how to surf.
Also, I asked him if he knew any local surf photographers. He had an awesome photographer take some photos of the lesson and even broke out a drone for some overhead video. Priceless.
Finally, he is really giving with his time. He insisted on meeting us for a Thanksgiving day lesson, and was super flexible with our schedules.
If you are interested in trying surfing I could not recommend Kalani...
