We had such an amazing experience with Ohana School of Surf. My family first rented surfboards and we were trying to work on our beginner surfing skills on our own, but without much success. Zack happened to be out in the water teaching a lesson and he was so friendly, called us over to where the good waves were and even offered us some pointers. We signed up for a lesson with him a few days later and had an absolute BLAST. Zack catered the lesson to each of us individually, we worked on paddle techniques, pop ups, reading waves, markers, surf etiquette, etc. And it was invaluable to have someone teaching and giving real time feedback so you can correct any bad habits early and start to get the feel and muscle memory down. Zack has a really special relationship with the water, and it translates in his teaching and his positive energy. It was such a great experience that we signed up for a second lesson and got to strengthen what we’d learned. After that my cousins, uncle and I spent the rest of our trip surfing on our own twice a day, catching tons of waves, and soaking in everything we learned. If we could do zero stars we could. Husband and three kids had surf lessons booked weeks in advance. Arrived early and there was nobody, figured out there are two locations that the instructor could be (the “directions” link and the address provided were different in the email received) and checked out both and there was no one and no signage. My husband and I both called and left messages, but no one would return our call. Ultimately there were no lessons because the instructor was a no-show. Very disappointing and unprofessional. Hopefully we can get a refund. *Edit, we were able to get a full refund, instructor reached out about 20 minutes after last message. However, it appears the instructor had my family marked down for the wrong time, despite receiving a confirmation email with the correct time. Offered to reschedule the lessons for the same day, but had other events planned that prevented us from rescheduling. *2nd Edit was rude after the fact because of my negative review. Our experience with our instructor, Zach, from the North Shore Ohana Surf School definitely exceeded our expectations - he was amazing. I signed up for a group lesson with my three daughters (ages 17, 15 and 13) and they were all a little nervous. Zach didn’t overcomplicate the learning process and helped us all feel comfortable in the water right away. He is extremely skilled and set us all up so we caught waves at just the right moment each time. We all got up several times and were able to get multiple runs in, even with four of us in the lesson. Zach gave us all the confidence we needed in the water to learn quickly and to have fun. Would definitely recommend to anyone at any level!! He also has a great photographer who took high quality pictures the whole time; we bought them for a very reasonable rate and love them.
