Director Rani Rathburn was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and professional when she assisted me with an ongoing problem with an irresponsible neighbor. After speaking with her and visiting her at the shelter over a period of time, I became a dog walker volunteer to assist her. Rani did more to promote this shelter and the animals than the past directors and employees. I believe these ridiculous negative comments come from a case of "sour apples" stemming from a disgruntled employee who is very hard to deal with, and because Rani would hold people accountable for their actions. And you would be surprised at the very irresponsible people who own pets in this county or people who call themselves "rescue workers" who have been charged with animal cruelty! People refuse to come and get their pets, knowing they are at the shelter because they are a nuisance and no longer want them, thinking the county government was now responsible for their mistake! Why don't we open public reviews on these people's actions? Things would get ugly indeed! People would drop in wanting to adopt a pet and after speaking with them for just a few minutes, you could tell they had no concept of what was involved or their future obligations, or they had a history of losing or giving pets away, or even admitted they did not have any extra income for extra vet care, which is why the shelter is always full in the first place! Everyone just wants instant gratification and can't be told no. And hence the shelter is full almost every day and they will keep spinning their wheels day after day in the same sad world they are stuck in. Very sad. But you can't soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by...
Read moreI used to volunteer here. The staff try their best to take care of all cats and dogs, so I have to give them credit where it's due. However, I tried to adopt a dog here, and the director didn't let me because I am 19 living in an apartment and take very well care of myself. When I first told her I lived in an apartment, she already started to doubt me saying that apartments don't like dogs that bark, which is true but she shouldn't have judged right there, and how would we even know if the dog would bark all the time? She wanted people who have families and a house and (are pretty much wealthy) to adopt the animals. I follow their Facebook page and sometimes I see posts talking about how a dog will be euthanized and "please come save this dog, give this loving dog a family" but you guys only like to let people who live in a house and have lots of money adopt an animal. Since then, I have found a 5 month old beagle/jack Russell in December and he is the best thing that's happened to me.. I do still live in an apartment and he does bark a lot but I am training and working with him on that still. He has plenty of food, water, treats, excercise, is totally healthy and up to date with his shots, and of course, receives plenty of love. So please do not judge a potential owner just because they live in an apartment. I know it isn't just me because I have spoken to people who have also been denied because they live in an apartment, including one of my best friends. I love all animals, but please do not waste your time trying to adopt a pet here if you live in...
Read moreThey are very unprofessional, rude and racist. Me and my gf went into get a dog or see news on a pitbull named lumpy after the lady was very rude about a rottweiler that wasn't put in show and she was very rude and was basically said no to me because I was black but when I said the dog was for my gf who is white she said well we would have todo a house check and you will have to fill out a application. I do not understand why that lady had to be so rude and unprofessional getting onto a employee in front of us as guest to your facility.my gf was very excited about getting lumpy and when the lady was rude about it to me she decided not to go through with it, I have previously owned rottweilers in the past and pitbulls and never have I ever had to go through what I went through today and them telling us that we couldn't have it because we didn't own our own house or have a fenced in yard? ! Since when do I have to have a fenced in yard to train a puppy to have manners? It was our first Visit and defiantly our last!!!I've never been so mistreated before by a animal shelter, and when we came into speak to the nice lady upfront the big lady that was rude to us butted in like she owned the place and we weren't even speaking to her.ok so the lady is Carol she needs to lose her job or atleast hold her comments and her racial profiling inside because she was extremely rude and needs to be repremanded for...
