I've been checking out the rail trail coming south from byberry. Today I worked out the easiest way to connect the two main pennypack trails and it's easy peasy. The terrain is rolling hills with maybe a couple hundred feet elevation change overall. I'm even hesitant to call them hills but I can't say it's flat. The trail (bristol rd start to fox chase farm) itself is wide enough for a family of 4 to completely block traffic because they're fixing a bike but I don't think I could fit my panzer tiger II on most of it. Its hard packed crushed stone. Not ¾ clean, the stuff you use for a walkway. It was busy on a Saturday from about 1030-100 though not as much off-trail or north of byberry. By the way, the upper Southampton section IS open so you can get from byberry to Bristol on the rail trail. It's more scenic in the park, of course but the whole thing is a nice easy trail. There's a lot of history behind the trail and some of it is memorialized with plaques, signs, and info boards. The parking areas generally have a portapotty and trash and recycling. Not much in the way of refreshments except the All Aboard Cafe on fetters mill in Bryn Athyn. Dunno if its an actual restaurant but the food truck is like 50 feet off the trail. Only been there just now and it was pretty good. If you want to go off trail, there are some gas stations and grocery store strip malls near the Southampton Station within a mile easy. All in all, it's a great experience whether you're looking to just get out and explore the park system - keep in mind there is a lot of private property on the northern end of this section of trail or if you just want an easy ride, run, or walk. I'll add more photos later if...
Read moreI never considered how many wonderful memories have been had for the 58 yrs. ive been going to diffetent areas of pennypack park. as a small child my older sisters would take me with them to enjoy summer fun and imagine how my grandmom told me in the 1920s the water was so clean they would bath and eat fruits off the trees!, when i became a teenager we would enjoy walking thru the section behind lincoln highschool, going to little city( an areas we went in cars to make put) or go to pleasant park on a weekend to run into friends who would drive thru in cars or motorcycles- there was always a crowd on a nice summer day!( again, this was once a place my grandmoms family would swim in the early 1900s) as i got older i began enjoying it once again for they put so much work into it in the last 15 years by adding trails, maps, new sections for picnicing or walking, new activities mostly for free that are a wonderful way to get out and meet new people in a city thats been so ever changing. changing! These days i venture to the bike trails and other fun beautiful nature in the arras of pennypackpark outside the city. They have a wonderful bike yrail with parking on welsh rd in near 2nd st.pike and another on county line rd in warminsteri. From the bike trail to the walking trail this is my new adult disney land! Great place... porter poppies along the route... didnt see any water fountains... maybe its in the beginning ... I started at the end @ the 5.25 mi mark..I heard about this place by my rugby sister posting about there half marathon and 10k race coming up in Aug.. never been on the trail so I thought I try it out before I sign up... just ran a 10k at the pennypack park and it went fairly well. So much shade areas to cool down and benches to sit. While running along the beautiful green leaves on the trees and creek water ...I have to say it was very peaceful.. Also it says on Google that the time I was running was pretty busy but it was very calm to me... everyone's was friendly ..parking was great as well which is a huge plus.. and they have a tool stand for your BIKE AWESOME... 4out of 5 because I didn't see any fountains...while I would give less for that... they did have a decent sit down restaurant area that helps..
