I experienced one of the most devastating events of my life this year when my son unexpectedly died from a drug overdose. I was the one who found him in our home, and after the medical examiner and the police left, it was up to me to make the decision of what to do with his body. I was already out of my mind with grief and shock and had no idea what to do.

My BIL suggested I call Riverview Cemetery and Maleah was like an angel, gently explaining the process and guiding me through each step. I was especially grateful that she mentioned we could have a viewing, which I hadn't even thought of. They were able to make him look very presentable and two days later, our whole extended family was able to come and say goodbye. It was such a beautiful movement of closure for everyone, albeit extremely heart-wrenching of course. I'm so thankful she mentioned we could do this as I had zero experience with this type of thing. She also explained all the legalities of the death certificates, etc., and helped me make all these decisions. She made everything so easy.

Regrettably, my experience on November 10, the official observance of Veteran's Day, at River View Cemetery was profoundly disheartening. Despite my anticipation, the office doors were firmly locked, devoid of any information regarding operating hours or special closures. However, the ultimate disappointment unfolded when I discovered the conspicuous absence of flags available for placement on the grave of my beloved, a veteran who dutifully served our country.

In stark contrast to previous years, when the office and mausoleum were accessible and adorned with patriotic symbols, this year's visit painted a disconcerting picture. The once well-managed and historically significant site now raises questions about its current stewardship. One cannot help but wonder: What has befallen this revered location, and who is at the helm of its management, if anyone at all? From my first phonecall, throughout the burial and funeral process and followup afterwards, the service and care we received was excellent. During an obviously stressful time, Laurel Carrasco and other staff members were very kind and helpful. Laurel's communication has been excellent in keeping me updated on items such as the headstone appearance and placement. I was very impressed when she contacted me to refund a portion of the prepaid expenses that weren't used. I appreciated the honesty, as at the time, I don't think I would have even noticed.
