I'm a graduate of Virginia Tech. I sent an email to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and their reply made it clear to me that at least one of them thought I was too old to apply. Age discrimination is illegal by federal law. I got a reply from Admissions, discouraging me from applying to medical school because of my age. I was encouraged to apply to PA school or some alternative medical practice. They can avoid being charged with age discrimination because of one of the many factors they use to determine acceptance or rejection from their medical school. Age discrimination would be hard to prove,but I retained the email I received from Admissions. I have no doubt that I would be a viable, competent, competitive, and intelligent medical school student, but they made it clear that my age was a factor.
