I walked into the Asian Food Market in Rockford, ready to finally get a bag of seasoned seaweed snacks that wasn't the size of a postage stamp. The air was thick with the beautiful, intoxicating scent of five different fermented things and something else I couldn't quite place, but I'm pretty sure it was either a dried mushroom or a forgotten dream. The fish section was a symphony of chaos, with a few rogue fish looking like they were in the middle of an existential crisis in the bottom of a freezer. It was a beautiful, authentic mess. The aisles were a maze of sauces, instant noodles, and snacks with packaging that screamed "I have no idea what this is, but I must have it."
