As a healthcare provider, I would like to say that I am shocked by the low reviews and ratings this hospital has received. But I am not, because the OBGYN department treated me terribly.
I had an OBGYN at Phelps Health. But, in my opinion, they miscalculated my due date by several weeks. As a result, I was forced to give birth to a 13 pound, 24 inches tall baby via emergency C section (major abdominal surgery) at another facility. My son is currently in the NICU at another hospital for intensive care. Again, I am of the opinion that I was not scheduled for an induction of my labor in time by my Phelps OBGYN. I was told to follow up with my Phelps OBGYN and did so immediately upon discharge. But, the Phelps OBGYN was on vacation and still no one at his office has been able to tell me when he will return. The issue with this? ...
Issue #1 - My Phelps OBGYN and his "on call" colleagues are the only ones who can provide me with pain meds without me going to the ER again. The other facility does not have me as a regular patient, so I was sent home with 2 days' worth of pain pills. The "on call" physician refused to write prescriptions for my Phelps OBGYN. So, I was forced to go to yet another facility for care that Phelps should have provided.
Issue #2 - I needed a C section follow up appointment to examine my scar, and it had to be done within 14 days. But, no one could tell me when my Phelps OBGYN would be back in town, so no appointment was scheduled.
I called and messaged the office several times (on a weekday). I detailed my discharge instructions and what I needed from the OBGYN team in the messages. The nurse intentionally responded to only part of my inquiry and continued to ignore my statements about being in pain. Mind you, I have no criminal or drug use history, so there was no need for the OBGYN team to be this dismissive about prescribing pain pills post major surgery.
It is one thing to be off on a due date, it's another to completely ignore your patient's needs post C section when they are in a high level of pain. I deeply regret using Phelps Health for OBGYN medical services, and I would highly encourage others to save themselves a lot of stress. Just make the drive to places like Jefferson City, Columbia, St. Louis, and Lebanon instead.
Phelps providers are smart but they are not God. A little humility goes a long way. The majority of people who utilize this hospital are either working class, middle class, and/or rural. They work hard for their money, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. It is hurtful when the medical team in any department does not treat them like a human being. Hopefully the service providers at Phelps Health will do better in the future. But, from the numerous "1 star" reviews I am reading, I am not sure when or if that will be happening. Until then, the best way to have peace of mind is to just avoid Phelps and spend your money elsewhere. One, two, or three people doing this will not make a difference to Phelps. But eventually, when hundreds and thousands of people stop going to this hospital that will send more of a message than posting 1-star reviews on Google.

Read moreI recently had a bad experience at phelps health. I wasnt going to post a review but I'm sharing in the hopes that things will change. On July 17th my 78 year old mother presented to the er with a prolonged migraine, vomiting, chest pain, and a systolic bp of 224. For anyone that doesn't know- "normal" is around 120-130ish. It took over 2 hours for her to get an ekg. They gave her some morphine and iv blood pressure medication and monitored her. I had to request more testing. Labs showed abnormal kidney function. Multiple phone calls and messages left were not responded to. She was finally admitted for observation and the er nurse documented that they had spoke to me, which they did not. On the floor, she continued to have vomiting, continued to have a migraine but her blood pressure slowly started to come down. However she still did not feel well. There were no orders to resume her iv fluids from the er. So for 12 hours, she had zero output, continued to vomit, and had the abnormal kidney function. I had to ask for fluids to be restarted. There was no documentation that she was vomiting although nursing administered Zofran. When I visited her in the hospital, I noted that her iv infiltrated which means that it was no longer in her vein and the fluid was causing some swelling on her arm. When I told her nurse, the nurse said- "well, obviously." She had no further testing and the physician kept wanting to discharge her until a physician in her pcps office called to speak to him. I had to request a cardiology consult to which the attending "did not think was necessary" I had to advocate for her because her case was not being taken seriously. Was it serious ? Well after some follow ups from her pcp months later we find that she has multiple new aneurysms on her brain. And unfortunately because of staffing shortages, the referral to neurosurgery has also been delayed. The standard of care at phelps health is abysmal. If you choose to go there, I hope you're lucky. Lucky that the staff listens to you and doesn't write you off. Lucky to get adequate testing. The hospital worked really hard 10-15 years ago to fight a bad reputation then and up until recently had executives that cared. Now. It's a...

After several unacceptable experiences here I have decided to seek my healthcare much further away in Springfield because the care I have received here has been so dangerous and incompetent.
I was a patient of the GI offices here and I have never been treated so poorly. Among the completely outrages and unacceptable experiences are the following: Getting an infection from my routine colonoscopy that I am still dealing with now two years later without proper diagnosis or care, Having to wait 4 months for the GI office to submit my prescription for approval after seeking treatment for my infection they caused, Lab staff not being trained on how to administer testing causing me to have to come back and forth to the lab multiple times because I was not given the appropriate prep instructions and lab staff still being so unprepared that they were asking me how to administer the test and reading the directions out of the box.
The staff in the GI office has never treated me with anything but annoyance and complete neglect and the staff in lab is so poorly trained that I have no confidence in the accuracy and outcome of testing preformed here. After contracting an infection from improperly sterilized equipment during my routine colonoscopy and now over a year of begging for appropriate care I am no longer willing to step foot in this facility. If even basic services cannot be completed in a timely, professional manner it is no wonder to me that this hospital is known in the community for causing harm.
I now have to go through the entire process of setting up appointments much further away and establishing care with new doctors for my very well known and treatable condition because of the complete lack of care verging on negligence I have received here. No patient should have to endure what I have to receive basic medical care and Phelps should be ashamed.
If you value your health, want to be treated like a human being, and be provided with appropriate care do not come to...
