Shaker Furniture of Maine — Local services in Scarborough

This review is an addition to my review 2 years ago: I have a 28 year old Shaker table that recently developed areas where the finish came off. It was very noticeable and it saddened me because my table held such sentimental value; many beautiful memories of loved ones gathered around it. I wanted to get it refinished but who and how?? And then I thought to call SFOM (I have bought pieces from them over the years) because they build/stain/finish the furniture themselves. They could have said no. But they didn't ... and my table was returned to me yesterday looking brand new. Thank you is not a big enough word to express my gratitude. They are simply the best! Over the years I have been buying shaker pieces from this company. They also just recently made a custom piece of furniture for me ... and I couldn't be happier! The quality and attention to detail was nothing short of exceptional! And I felt the price was reasonable. In addition, the owner/employees are so great to work with throughout the process ... or simple floor sale. I was in the middle of having my home painted when they were ready to deliver. I asked if they could possibly hold off until my painting was done and they responded "no problem; call us when you are ready". When I did call, they were able to get it out to me within a couple of days. Delivery guys were conscientious and great as well! May 2025: Ordered a 2-drawer file cabinet. The workmanship quality is beyond believe how well made. Not many craftsman make furniture like these. You will not find particle wood or cheap imitation wood, but wood materials that is solid. The hardware is high quality and quiet. Can't say enough for the staff who packs each item for a secure shipment arrival. Again, another piece to our collection of Shaker furniture of Maine. Keep up the good work and quality.

Many years my spouse has had a mix match bedroom set that went with the Shaker Pencil Bed. Finally found someone to complete the set and Shaker Furniture of Maine did such that. We live in Texas and within 6 days two 3-drawer maple night stands arrived in perfect condition. Steve, the owner, kept us connected the entire way with updates and very friendly to work with. January 2024 Posting: Ordered a Night Step End Table. Unfortunately FEDEX dropped the piece in transit one or more times resulting in damage to the End Table. The owner was totally on top of the damage and fixing the problem, even through it was not their fault. The fact that the owner was engaged with FEDEX on the issue and updating us in the process. I needed a storage piece that would fit into a specific space in my dining room and a Chimney Cupboard was the best option.

I couldn't find a store near me in Virginia that offered it, so although I tried to gather as much information as I could before making the purchase, I was unable to see it in person because the store is in Maine.

I made the purchase on December 22, 2023, willing to accept the risk, and it was delivered on March 4, 2024.

The positives are that it's a higher quality than the average furniture which uses engineered wood (plywood, MDF) or softwoods entirely (this piece uses cherry wood, a hardwood, for at least the frame) with weak joinery, they offer nation wide shipping, and the build-to-delivery time was faster than many.

The negatives are that the sides and shelves are plywood but I was told before making the purchase that they were solid wood (which is not true), and both of the doors do not sit flush when in the closed position (one end on each door sticks out slightly).

It supposedly being solid wood was a big selling point for me, so I wasn't very happy when it was delivered, but returning it wasn't an option for me.

I likely would not have made the purchase if I was able to see it in person.
