I was really hopeful for this place to be good, we went in and noticed there was no meat on display at all, we asked for thick cut prime with little fat, we were told they were 10oz each so we got two, when they rang us up we were charged for 2.5lbs, when we got home and opened the package we had two steaks that were quite literally 70% fat, after cutting the large slabs of fat off and cooking we had 12oz of meet that was full of gristle, now I have no problem with their prices but I will say I paid a very hefty price for almost 2lbs of pure fat. I will always support local businesses but I think this experience has pushed me away from ever buying my meat here again. End note the lady’s working are not to blame, with time I think they will learn how to better serve the customer on what they ask for, however they seemed very pushy to make a sale. Also their sheet with quarter and half prices is very confusing it would be nice to see something with a total price paid per pound instead of several...
Read moreHave tried 4 different butchers in the INDY area looking for a great fresh cut Ribeye steak. A friend suggested Spegal's in Shelbyville, so I drove the 50 miles to try them. As one of the other reviews stated they had just a few pieces of fresh cut steaks on display and several items frozen in their coolers? I chose a 3/4 pound fresh cut Ribeye and a frozen package of Beef Short Ribs. I cooked the Ribeye to a medium rare and my wife and I had it for dinner. The steak was just OK, but for the price it was not what I was searching for. First time I had tried Red Poll meat and I believe I will stick with Black Angus meat. The short ribs were mostly fat and we were only able to eat a small portion of the meat and for $13.00 for two ribs they were not worth the money. The small amount of meat was just OK and was very tuff to cut and eat. Looks like my search will continue and I will be able to save the 50 miles of gas driving to...
Read moreThe meat is delicious and the owners and staff are very friendly. I stop in about twice a month. The ground beef is phenomenal. It is around 90/10 and actually taste like beef, unlike what I used to buy at the grocery store. The smoked chops are my second favorite item from there. I just put in an order for my first quarter cow. Can't wait!
Regarding the 1-star reviews: Sometimes if you go beginning of the week they might be low on meat in the case because they sell out fast. That has happened to me once. I think they have deliveries from the butcher on Tuesday/Wednesday. I look at this like a positive, meaning the meat is always fresh! I just stopped in on a Saturday and there was plenty to choose from. Might recommend calling in advance...
