I have been a customer of SELCO for 15 years now.
The good: Service is reliable. I work remotely, do online gaming, and also use only streaming services for TV. We can have all of these services running simultaneously and the service never skips a beat, even streaming 4K. People who work here are probably your neighbors and have a stake in the town. I've been here for a few bad storms that knocked out power in the whole region, and the SELCO folks were out around the clock in awful weather restoring service. We generally have power restored before towns with commercial providers. Rates have been very consistent, and some years we have even gotten refunds(!) when they had too much money. I have never seen that from a commercial power provider, it would be helping the CEO pay for another vacation house. Electric rates tend to be considerably lower than surrounding towns. SELCO provides Internet connectivity for town schools, municipal buildings, and the library. When we've needed service the staff have been friendly and helpful. In 15 years we haven't needed much service, but when we needed it, it was definitely good. There's no hassle with whatever packages you want to pick for cable/telelphone/internet. There are some small discounts with bundling but in comparison to other commercial providers, if you only want Internet, they don't try and upsell you with bundles. No contracts with expiration dates and higher fees you have to argue down. Our Internet speeds have increased over the years and our costs have remained pretty much the same. SELCO is committed to Net Neutrality and does not prioritize anyone's content. SELCO's income stays local, and is pushed back into system maintenance and upgrades.
The bad: Service desk is business hours only. It would be nice if they had Saturday service or could schedule outside of "regular" business hours, but given that our service has been reliable this really isn't a big deal.
The out-of-SELCO's control (kind of): Broadband access in the US is a total mess. I wish we could have a number of providers to select from and have true competition. I wish we had Net Neutrality as the law of the land. I wish towns were not allowed to grant monopoly access. I wish companies like Comcast and Verizon weren't writing laws to outlaw organizations like SELCO and instead providing better services at lower cost. Maybe one day my wishes will come true.
Until my wishes come true, having experienced myself (and through friends/family) what Verizon/Comcast/AT&T provide as services, I can say that I am happy with SELCO providing the services it does, they offer a decent, low hassle, reliable service...
Read moreWith regards to the SELCO line workers I cannot say enough good things. This last Noreaster downed a large oak tree on our property and it dragged down all the power lines + snapped the transformer pole. Power out on the entire road + the road blocked by the tree. They got one end of the road working the same night but could not get to the snapped pole same night as it was blocked by the tree (and the storm was in heavy progress). The next day they started at noon and worked steadily until 8:30 at night. They cleared the road, installed a new pole, new transformer and got 4 houses wired up. They also re-connected our phone and internet line which also came down. They worked hard. I was amazed at their perseverance to get the rest of the road powered up before nightfall. We were not even without power 24 hrs. Great job guys. I also want to mention that someone knowledgeable and professional was on the Helpdesk immediately every time we called and able to give us...

I believe that no matter which company I subscribe to, there will be outages and issues. With Selco, not only have the outages been extremely low, they have been great at keeping everyone posted about the progress on the fixes on their FB page.
