Food Lion — Local services in Staunton

We recently moved to Staunton from Florida where we were lifelong Publix shoppers. Publix' cleanliness and stellar service have always been its competitive edge, and it is known as one of the best companies in the country to work for (my husband is retired Publix management). We were prepared to be disappointed with the options available here in Staunton. After checking out the other two grocers in town, we stopped by the local Food Lion on Coalter Street and were pleasantly surprised. Everything is as neat and orderly as a store on opening day. The store is scrupulously clean; the floors are so spotless and shiny that you can literally see your reflection in them, and the grocery shelves and departments are well tended - looking as good at the end of the day as they do first thing in the morning. Our last visit was in the early evening, and when we went to obtain items from the produce department, the racks were well graded and full, and the offerings were as fresh as if they had just come off the truck. Even more impressive is the professionalism of the staff with whom we have interacted. To a person, they have been courteous, pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful. The attitude of the staff ensures that each shopping experience is a pleasant one. In particular, we have been assisted by Melanie in customer service who is an absolute delight - as is Jasmine, whose ready smile and cheerful demeanor make you glad you stopped by. We were assisted by Patrick in the meat department ( more than once, and he was incredibly pleasant each time) who went out of his way to help us, even going so far as to answer an inquiry about another department. Lauren has checked out our order on multiple occasions - always with a big smile and a kind word. We had occasion to speak with Christy in the bakery department, and she also was polite, helpful, and a great ambassador for her workplace. We commented to Patty, the front end manager, about how impressed we were with the store and staff and what a pleasure it was to shop there. She was wonderful as well. I have been into this grocery store on several occasions. The first couple of times I went the staff was very friendly. My husband and I went last Friday night to purchase water and coffee. The cashier's were extremely rude. They did not even greet us when we walked up to the check out line. There was even a manager pricing items who never even bothered to greet us. I just recently moved to the area and I have been going to Martin's for all of my grocery shopping. Not only is the staff extremely friendly,but the prices are just as cheap. This location isn't always ideal for me but it's still on the top of my list of "go to" grocery stores in Staunton. Overall, the employees are very helpful, kind and knowledgeable. The deli items sell quickly because everything is made fresh daily. Their rotisserie chicken salad is so yummy! The addition of the wing bar is a huge bonus and the produce section is always stocked with all the items I purchase weekly!
