If you are a non-nonsense lifter looking for a broad array of equipment, this place is ideal.
Now, I am not a member, but have occasionally visited the gym numerous times over, oh, maybe a decade. The review is given from an "outsider perspective."
While this gym offers (apparently) many different fitness offerings, I have always appreciated it for being a bit of an "old school weights gym."
I have been a competitor in both strength and bodybuilding competition for decades. I bring that experience to my assessment of any gym. My interests therefore, are not based on high degrees of customer service and amenities, but rather based on the basic ability to conduct a decently wide range of weights exercises. For those purposes, this gym scores well.
They have power racks and deadlift platforms and competent set-ups for powerlifting, Oly, and CrossFit-style training (rubber plates, boxes, etc.). Yet where they shine is weights, weights, weights. A wide range of machines from hyper-specified to "what I'd expect," and lots of HEAVY weight.
Honestly, this gym feels (in the best possible way) like an older school vibe. It makes you want to "get intense" and just work.
I have often said that you can tell a hard working gym based on the clutter. NOT being unorganized or sloppy, but rather just having lots and lots of "stuff" all over the place. This usually means a gym where people work, where there's lots of options, and the members are dedicated to the task at hand. This place feels that way.
Now, if you need a pristine locker room, well, you may be a little too fragile for this place. While things generally seem clean enough, there is a lot of wear and tear, older carpets, and you can tell it is not refreshed often. If these things interrupt your ability to train hard well, you won't appreciate it. If you're someone comfortable with giving up a little bit of tidiness in exchange for an aggressive gym mood, well, you won't be bothered in the slightest.
I am not a member, but here and there come down from Boston to train. This is one of the few 24-hour gyms left, and my schedule is sometimes off what city gym hours offer. I also like the no-pretense, nothing faux-fancy vibe. And I ALWAYS prefer to support mom-and-pop gyms, especially when hey are preserving that olds chill "weights palace" vibe, which they do here unapologetically.
I come. I train. I feel good. It would be easy to nitpick, but somewhat pointless to cast an overly-critical eye on what is a "get what you get" place of simplicity yet options. I am glad this place stays open. Worth the trip out of your way if you're just looking to train, need late hours, and don't get all flustered by working-class lifting spaces that aren't trying to be fake posh. This gym is just consistently being what they are: a place to train with a range of options, generous hours, and tons of space, especially for those with a "lifter's mentality" who are comfortable self-structuring and doing...
Read moreThis gym is awful stay away from it . I applied to be a member back in 2016 and at the time I was told that I needed to provide a 30 day cancellation notice. Throughout the years I didn't attend the gym very much but did notice the folks that attended when it was first known as Gold Gym started to leave the gym I didn't understand why. In 2018 I attended the gym more and started to notice how dirty the pol was and poorly maintained it remained. I also noticed the gym had tons of dust and never seem to be cleaned so often. I brought this to the attention of the staff there and it remained that way . The owners Tom is never at the facility and is very hard to come in reach with . In December of 2018 I notified staff that I would be canceling my membership and was told I was all set. I never heard anything until I changed my account and called to confirm . Upon calling to confirm I was told that Tom the owner needed to get the bank approval. I found this weird as I didn't understand what they had to do with this . He didn't want me to know he was the owner and through it on the bank to make the decision if I could make sure the payments was stopped for February 1,2019. Now at this time I would be due for a new enrollment fee and I would also be paying into the membership. Tom contacted me informed me that he didn't have any doc stating that I canceled. I informed him that I did inform the young staff that was present and he said he was going to fire the person and get back to me. I never heard from Tom until I received an email that stated I owed the gym . I contacted Tom and he acted as if he had no knowledge and went ahead and never canceled the membership so I was billed the service fee along with the monthly fee as well . When speaking to him he was upset and said he was loyal to who was loyal to him he reference. He said that he has no proof and therefore I was to be charged, I informed him that this was unfair and didn't see this coming at all . He then informed me that I was to billed for march as well although he knew I was canceling and still spoke to him in January regarding this . I received another email today of him stating I owed a balance and after 200 I would be sent to collection . This gym is a rip off and total upset that the locals are leaving for cleaner and better gyms within the area. His goal is to charge folks for service fee and etc so he can remain in profit . Don't come to this gym you will be doing yourself a disservice by attending and notice the uncleanliness of...
Read moreBeware of their contract agreement. I had one year contract agreement for the whole family with this gym. The contract expired a few weeks ago and instead of having a staff contact me to renew the contract, they decided to continue to draw the monthly rate and pretended the expired contract is still in effect. I confronted this with the staff and got response as the contract state they do continue to draw payment even when the contract is up. Now, my question is what's the point for this time bounded contract agreement if they can execute the "keep silent" clause and draw money from my credit card indefinitely or until customer confrontation? I have been a member of a few gyms over the years and this is a first! To make matter worst. I decided to cancel the membership as the result of this confrontation and the staff responded as there needs to be 31 days in advance for contract cancellation. My initial response is what contract? The expired contract? The in effect "keep silent forever" until confrontation contract? Also, I asked for a physical list of billing inquiry they charged me for the duration of the contract, something any simple billing system can do. They were unable to produced that neither. Instead of trying to keep loyal customer or at least contract bound, they wanted those little extra money and dumped the big picture. How's that for a service oriented organization.
Updated: Now they are claiming I only cancelled myself out of the whole family membership. Charging me a different monthly price with no active contract and no agreement or any paper for the new monthly price. Again, STAY AWAY! you've...
