Over all we thought the 2021 reenactment was a good experience. We attended the event on Saturday July 3 2021. The event staff seemed overwhelmed with the large spectator turnout. Despite seemingly being overwhelmed, the event staff did their best with what they had. We appreiciated all their hard work, much of it not visible to the crowds. Thank you for keeping history alive!!!
The reenactors were great, especially those who took time to address and interact with the spectators. The weatlh of quality history education, freely given by the reenactors was worth the price of admission! Thank you all,Kudos, and well done!!!
All that said, we were confused when it came to the battle reenactment, as the location on the itinary stated it would take place on the Battlefield. (clearly defined on the provided map) The battle skrimishes actually took place in an area east of the battlefield. (see attached map, the actual skrimished took place in the area highlighted in yellow) This area was partially wooded and difficult for spectators to get a good view of the action. Many spectators we interacted with were unhappy about not being able to view the action. Unfortunatly many small children and people in wheelchairs were unable to view the action due to their lack of ability to gain viewing access.
If the battle action took place on the battlefield, there would have been much better access for the spectators to gain a better view. I'm sure the reenactments will improve over time to allow everyone a good view...
Read moreJust terrible. Went for the Gettysburg Reenactment and it was horribly disorganized, disrespectful, and all around unpleasant. Had to wait an hour to get int. We couldn't eat all day because they only had one food booth with a line seemingly longer than the one to get in. The schedule and map were wrong, making us loose out on getting good seats for the battle. We were later unapologetically and rudely kicked out of the marginal seats we did get 20 minutes before the finale because they decided to changes the designated spectator area last minute. (meanwhile people who jumped the fence and sat in the non designated spectator area on the hill were allowed to keep their seats). The spectator area was already incredibly small to begin with, and was just made smaller. The only place to go was to the back, next to a dumpster where the whole field was obstructed. So we woke up early, drove hours to get here, tried to save good seats early, waited all day in the hot sun to see the battle and we saw nothing. The attached picture was our view. I last went to the Gettysburg Reenactment in 2017. It was at a different location then and it was much larger and much better. I showed up late and still got good seats then and there was no massive overcrowding issue. We will not be returning to this or any other GBPA/Lady...
Read moreBeautiful house for the tour and incredible yearly reenactment/living history events! Tickets well in advance strongly advised for special events, don't know about normal visits. Special events have a wait if you get there right when they start, but not much if you wait a little. Lots of security, like a music festival, empty your pockets and open bags, scanny wand thing, wristbands. The reenactors have to wear wristbands too which takes you out of it if the sleeves don't cover them. Wonderful people working there, volunteers, amazing crowd of reenactors. The man descended from/portraying Nathan Bedford Forrest is just as intense as his ancestor and will threaten you with his cane knife if you are rude about his ancestor (not myself but someone else, all part of the act and everyone was safe), which was very engaging to say the least! They are not funded by or in any way beholden to the Federal Gov't or any related agencies, so they can pretty much talk about whatever they want, which is beneficial to education in my opinion, but fact-check and do your own research with reliable, peer-reviewed or primary sources as well about anything you learn, here or somewhere beholden...
